Yercaud

By 18:30PM after sunset we decided to drive down. Weather was getting chilly, already down by 2 degrees to 23 degrees.

Since it was a Sunday evening, we had a lot of returning traffic to Salem from Yercaud. Finally reached Salem by 19:30PM and continued on to reach Bangalore by 22:30PM.

Thus ends a short sweet 5 hours drive to Yercaud from Salem.

END

The Kuppanur-Yercaud route looks decent. Looks worth a try

Lalu, the 22 km stretch you described in post 98 is the Kanavaipudur route or the Kuppanur route ?

The Salem Attur road is having some 4 laning work and deviations till you reach the Railway gate, from where you take left to Kuppanur and again a left from Kuppanur to Yercaud.

I tried to attempt the kanavai pudur road, and localites advised me against it. It is a total of 22Km, the initial 7 kms are good and the last 15km are not yet done. For the last three years some work is happening, but nothing to call a road for cars. Sumos go, but the drivers said even their belly hits the stones. They expect another 2 more years to get a road!

Pictures will come soon.

The 22Km one is the Kanavaipudur route. The localites advised me against doing that with car.

Kuppanur route is decent. Yercaud is nearly 28Km from Kuppanur.

Hi Ramesh,

I'm off to Yercaud tomorrow from Chennai and I want to know the road condition of this route you've mentioned above. Is the road smooth like the usual Salem-Yercaud route? And, is the road broad enough with not much steep inclines? Thanks!

The kuppanur ghat road is smooth but narrow. I got stuck behind a bus for a long time. No place to overtake and I had to go slightly off the road to overtake eventually. With the bus driver cooperating, of course

It won't be as wide and smooth as the normal route. But, it is not bad. If you plan to reach Yercaud quickly then take the usual Salem-Yercaud route. If you want to do more scenic route to Yercaud and don't mind about time, then take the Kuppanur route.
