Yes, the passes will have snow, and the small lakes will be completely frozen (eg kiager Tso, Tso kar). Even Tso Moriri may be partially frozen.

You may also get snowfall at the passes. But it also carries the risk of passes getting closed for a couple of days. Chang La is especially problematic in this regard.

Re: Ladakh and Changthang : The Wilderness Chronicles

I just found a news piece which says that the Leh-Manali highway will be closed till May 15th due to heavy showfall.
Heavy snow blanks out tourism - Times Of India

The Srinagar-Leh highway opened a few days back.

The link is wrong.
Manali leh highway seldom opens by May 15.
It usually opens early June. Rohtang pass is slated to open on May 15 this year, if it does not keep snowing.

Manali Leh highway opened mid june last year due to heavy snowfall on the passes in the month of May.

Kiddo definitely should get the opportunity. Baralach La should be drenched with snow & snow walls for your to drive through, if doing the Manali-Leh highway. Same goes for Chang La. But being the monsoons, expect Rohtang Jot to be in a pathetic condition.

Re: Ladakh and Changthang : The Wilderness Chronicles

Tanvwer this thread of yours has inspired us to make this week long trip to leh/ladakh, thank you. Although we would have liked to drive but i guess i would be more comfortable in driving that long if i had a car like yours. So till i buy a car like that will have to fly.

BTW did you ever worked in hcl chennai?

Not much snowfall in those regions. Rain shadow area you see, except for freak weather events. Even for those, you need a an active WD

Re: Ladakh and Changthang : The Wilderness Chronicles

Tanveer,
I do not see any mention of the new bridge across Pagal Nullah in your 2010 log. Did I miss it?
Could you please clarify?
