Pangong Lake is truly a photographers paradise. We had to go through Changla pass which is more treacherous with worse roads than Khardungla IMO

Wait till you see the Zozilla pass, then you'll change your perception. The pictures are really awesome.

Let me take a guess on this.

1. Guesthouses/ hotels are usually denoted by colourfull flags, hence the campsite owner must have put these.

2. As there is a "proper code" for flying the National Flag, he must have come out with this idea of flying seperate colour flags to get the "Indian" feeling and yet not breaking the code. Very good idea I must say and they do stand apart.

Back to the thread, I think the pics and the write up is awesome. Hoping to read more soon.

Camp Goldrop at Sarchu. It was very cold and breezy here. And basic things area luxury like water. Our promised bucket of hot water wasn't delivered in the morning - the water was frozen.

Thanks Ramkya. What a coincidence considering the number of places to stay within a km of this place.

BTW Did your water supply freeze too.

One thing about Sarchu I noticed was the wind coming in from the mountains, which added to the wind chill in a big way.

No, but was freaking cold. The wind chill was a killer, had to turn the car away from the wind.

P'Tso as Gull Habitat is fairly unique given that these gulls migrate out of northern water masses (East Europe, Russia have quite a few) and fairly unique to Gulls, their migration isn't seasonal, they are known to reside in their migrated habitat till they are fit to breed sometimes 3-4 years.

I learnt from a Aviary Biologist colleague.

@Goan & @Ramkya - Are those campe private or belong to military? Appreciate to shed some light this. Also at what all places can one locate this camps? Are these intended for Leh travellers due to lack of building a proper accomodation?

These are all private camps. and are located all some places on the leh manali rd. they are there at P'gang and tsomoriri too. The locals do not want permanent structures there thus the camps.

Sarchu ones are all private and seasonal, one of the most oraganized on this route, the prices fluctuare on demand and supply. As most travellers take a break, it's about mid way, one can reach there on a Leh-Manali drive by evening, logical to break journey. The problem is the altitude, cold and wind-chill which plays a heavy toll on some people, specially those who come on the Manali-Leh route without acclamatization.
