Thanks Addy, No it did not rain at all and the weather was hot.

The train started from Mangalore at sharp 8:40 AM. Reached Kukke at 11 AM and Sakleshpur at 1:15 PM approx. So the train spent about 2 hours roughly in the ghat section.

Shribagilu to Yedakumari

The stretch between Shribagilu and Yedakumari has some stunning tunnels and bridges coupled with magnificent hills all around.

re: Mangalore -> Bangalore via Sakleshpur (Train)

This does bring back old memories.. Thanks for posting it! Did the famous railway track "trek" before the train started plying.. Was exciting at that time walking over broken bridges and dark tunnels. When i went, the work on repairing the bridge repair work had just started and most of the "sleeper rails" were missing on bridges.. The station conditions seemed to have improved a lot since the "abandoned" days.. There were even stories/rumours circulating at that time claiming that few people had gone missing and did not complete the trek.

The roads are a mess between these two places. So, i will defly plan a day trip between these two places.. And for once, A/c coaches are not preferred :-)

Beautiful photologue, Mohsin. I have travelled between Mangalore and Bangalore by bus and car but never by train. And now I can see what I missed.

Seeing the response on this thread, I guess a lot of folks would enjoy watching this video that I came across in Youtube. Courtsey (and due thanks) to the uploader makamath.

Here are the final set of pics I owe.

The train continues along the mighty and beautiful hills, breath taking bridges, tunnels spanning upto 500-600 meters.

And ofcourse the chai walas without whom the journey is incomplete.

re: Mangalore -> Bangalore via Sakleshpur (Train)

Lovely stretch and lovely Pics.I grew up in a place that was on the Kalka -Shimla train route, and I still have beautiful memories of watching the trains, tekking the tracks and wandering into long drippy tunnels.
I am doing the strertch in August end from Bangalore to mangalore ,but unfortunately I am taking the night train. If I get up real early, is there any chance I will catch of the Ghat section, or would all that go by in the dark ?

You would probably enter the ghats at around 4 am (IIRC). I have seen the train reach Donigal Station at that time. So, in that case you may be well out of the ghats before daylight sets in.

Re: Mangalore -> Bangalore via Sakleshpur (Train)

Awesome photos, Mohsin!!
I chanced upon this thread only now, and still rue my decision of taking the night train to Mangalore while doing my Coastal Karnataka trip.

Anyway, I shall try another time and combine this trip with another one from Mangalore taking the Konkan Railway. 2 in 1. What say?

Re: Mangalore -> Bangalore via Sakleshpur (Day Train)?

There is a day train between Bangalore - Mangalore now. The journey duration is approx. 12 hours which is on higher side compared to the inter-city bus journey. Has any of the members traveled on this day train?

Please share your experience.
