Day 4 for us was very lazy just lying in the beds, chatting and playing cards. We were eagerly waiting for Day 5 to have fun on the island.

Day 5: Glimpses of Kadmat

Day 5 is here, finally we would keep our feet on land, believe me just sailing makes one sick of ship. I was just waiting when we would reach Kadmat. Not sure what was the effect, but on ship I used to get up every day at 6:00 AM. It had a +point though, enjoy the sunrise and cool breeze.

Routine to reach Island was the same
  • Finish breakfast
  • Wait near disembark gate
  • Board the boats
  • Reach the island

Btw, Raghu230506, is it safe to take an entire family (wife, children, parents) on the trip? I mean on the ship and stay on the islands.
Thanks

It's very much safe. As I mentioned kids can enjoy only if they are above 10/12 years. Else they would not have fun.

Kadmat Contd...

We reach the Jetti and boy it's a paradise, I just could not stop loving this place and thanking my friend. It's a wonder full place. Some details of Kadmat

Source:

Kadmat Island – Visit Kadmat one of the Famous Lakshadweep Islands

SILVER SPARKLING white sand dipping into the clear, cerulean sea, schools of fish playing amidst brilliant coral reefs, tucked away between swaying palms are rustic huts in which peace of mind is the main quotient. Inaccessible except by water, miles from what we know as ‘civilization’, Kadmat has no satellite signals, which means no cell phones or television. Does anyone need any more reasons to visit?

One of the few allots in Lakshadwadeep archipelago which is open to visitors, Kadmat is very tiny—just eight kilometers long and 550m wide at its broadest point. Created by the action of corals on mountains submerged under the Arabian Sea, the emerald isles of Lakshadwadeep are part of the same range that further extends to form Maldives. Kadmat is the only island that has lagoons on both eastern and western sides, making it an ideal place for sunbathing and diving.

The prime attractions of this little island lie under the pristine waters, where vast meadows of sea grass frame a bold extravaganza of color and form. An astonishing variety of living creatures coexist in an elaborate and beautiful tapestry of interaction and interdependence. Because of their protected status, Lakshadwadeep’s reefs are among the least explored in the world, and the wealth of coral formations (including black coral) attracts not only explorers, but also an amazing variety of tropical marine life ranging from tiny transparent jellyfish that change shape continuously, to the mighty sharks.

Winter is one of the best seasons to visit this beautiful and splendid place. At this time the ocean is magic, the plankton in the waters cause phosphorescence, which glitters like fairy lights and gives the impression of stars spread under one’s feet. Days are beautiful and you can have your fill of snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, water skiing, sailing, wind surfing and fishing. In this silent world of sun-washed oceans, you will experience some of the most exciting undersea adventures in India.

There is something very elemental about the ocean. It’s the cradle of all life, and represents both, the most powerful and the gentlest aspects of nature. You have to abandon all excess baggage – your ego, sense of power, status, money, ambition, vision, greed, hunger and all fears—before you can go underwater and feel ECSTATIC. It’s like being in the womb of the most powerful force of Earth, where you have no control over your surroundings.

The island maintains an identity that is still tradition bound. Its culture has evolved from being linked to the sea. The local community is entirely Muslim and primarily fisher folk. Coconut and fish still dominate the conversation. Yet, it’s also a land where things are never static, even the silvery white sandbanks are perpetually shifting with the action of the tides and currents. So, every time you visit you never know what shape you find it in.

It’s a place where time ceases to matter, where you must flow with the rhythms of the sea, soak in the stillness, the silence, the solitude, revel in a life free from blaring horns and the urgent frenzy to be somewhere, doing something. And be warned, it’s downright ADDICTIVE!

Day 4: Kadmat Contd...

After admiring the beauty, we started checking out the activities planned for the day, we had the following options

> Scuba Diving - Not part of the package one needs to pay for it.
> Snrokeling
> Kayaking
> Glass boat ride
> Cycle on rent (100 Rs each to be paid if one needs to explore the island)

SPORTS organized events:

> Lunch
> Folklore
> Visit to near by Coconut oil factory (we skipped this).
> Snacks and Tea

Most interesting thing and the reason we choose Kadmat was for Scuba diving, first thing we wanted to finish off is diving before the crowd would pitch in, since it's a paid one not many were showing interests. There are many diving sites in Kadmat

Discovery (one for the first time divers depth of 3-5 meters)

Then a wide range of sites ranging from 8mts to 30mts, but these are for only certified divers. Wish we had them, these sites included few the following
  • Ship wreck
  • Turtle land
  • Shark land
  • Octopus land
  • and so on...

We had no other choice than sticking to Discovery, we have been told that our slot for diving would be at 9:30 AM, we were excited. Price list was give and it was mentioned 4000 INR for Discovery (45min in total which includes 15mins of demo and intro). Couple of calls made as my friend knew locals and the price was dropped to 2500 INR.

We were waiting for the trainers to come and heard they would be late as they are out for open sea diving, finally we got a slot for 12:00 PM. We had some 3hrs in hand to carry out

> Exploring the resort
> Glass Boat ride

So we started off to explore the resort, It's a pretty good resort but an expensive one. One needs to shed 4000INR (non AC) and 6000 INR(AC) per night which includes food, we need to stick to them for food as there would be no options on the island.

Kadmat is more of diving place, so lot of options for professional divers, for newbies nature is available at it's best.

Day 5: Kadmat Contd...

Glass Boat Ride:

It's a small boat that can carry 7-8 people, and has a glass at the bottom, this is to see the corals and reefs below, it was great but for us the disappointment was that the same site is for Discovery Scuba diving, so it would probably a visit above and beneath water for us. This ride takes around 20mins, kids enjoy this the most, my trip had many and you should see their faces.

We still had 2hrs to spend before we could do Diving, so started exploring the west side of the island, this side is addictive, we started walking through the shore and couldn't believe we spent almost 1:30ms in doing so. We didn't do snorkeling because we didn't want to get tired before the diving. After all Diving was a must to do for us.

Awesome pics, Raghu.
Rs.2500 for a dive is damn cheap. I would go daily with that rate and you are lucky to get it at that rate.
Waiting for more pics and info.

I agree 2500 is good price, but this is just in the discovery area which is inside the lagoon and mostly covered during our glass boat ride. I was expecting a new site with more reefs and corals. May be next time, I heard Bangaram Island is much more beautiful and the dive there is the best, we couldn't manage as we had to stick to package tour.

All other dives are very expensive it's more than 8k.

Day 5: Best experience I have ever had

After a pleasant walk we returned the resort main office to start the diving, by the time we reached all the instructors were back from their open sea diving. No further delays expected, we were handed pair of fins, money paid and bill received.

Then few instructions were given to us, most of them were standard. We were also given instructions on how to dive down and how to rise in case required but this would be done by them as they accompany us.

Few important instructions

> One should constantly breath even when he is coming out to surface as pressure difference would have an affect on the lungs.
> Due to pressure difference ears might block, so instructor guided us what to do in such a case.
> If mask not secured properly water might come and block the nose, to release they said if pointed we need to ensure we are not breathing through the nose and they would clear it.

Standard Sign chart external source from internet
Three Friends & A Trip to ISLANDS-standardscubadivinghandsignals.png

One thing that's not in the chart is the sign to come on to surface, a thumbsup means that. We were pretty determined we would not do this till the end

So off we go,

First thing they would do is tie some weights on to your waist, this would aid one to dive down. Depending on the weight the number of weight blocks would differ. Fins then go, and guide would be in water wearing all the equipment. We then need to be in the water floating and facing the sky, so that they can wear the jacket carrying the gas and secure it. Then a mask, followed by the air inlet in to your mount, once we were comfortable in breathing, we were then slowly made to snorkeling for a minute and then once we show ok sign air from the jacket would be released so that one would go down the water. In case one needs to raise, they would fill the jacket with air and you would on the surface in no time.

I would let the pics to talk rest

In total we were under water for about 30mins, it's a wonderful experience diving down, we only felt pressure on ears once during the dive and I had an issue with my mask and came to surface once to clear my mask. We were allowed to touch corals and reefs in case they are safe and throughout 30mins of dive we covered some 400mts of radius, watching boats from under water and anchors and the marine life is something that one needs to feel and can't be expressed. I was more excited than my first F1 live race, watching and being in action all by yourself is an amazing thing. We thanked the instructors paid 500 as token of appreciation, we spent next 30mins swimming the entire are and touching almost all the boats near by anchored. We were exhausted and needed a refuel, headed towards lunch section to have munching and watch the folklore in action.

After lunch SPORTS organized a visit to Coconut oil factory which we skipped as we didn't find interest, rather spent time doing snorkeling in the lagoon.

At 4:30PM we were asked to board the tempo travellers to reach Jetti. Off we go from the Island, wish we had another day on this island. We had so many things to talk after the wonderful diving experience, next few hours just went in doing that.

Ship started sailing towards Cochin at 5:30 PM. Expected time to reach Cochin was 9:00 AM.

After a nice dinner, and some chatting we called the day,..
