Thank you sir.

Saheliyon Ki Badi :

Another auto ride from Pichola lake to Saheliyon ki Badi. This area of Udaipur looked to be much different than the Old Udaipur area. This area had wide roads and modern buildings. We reached the gate of Saheliyon Ki Badi soon enough.

The word "BADI" or "BARI" is used in several Indian languages including Hindi and Bengali. Almost all of them meaning a House or a place to stay. This was the same kind of BADI. Made for the attendants or "Saheliyan" of a Princess. This was there place to stay.

We enter through the huge gate.

The whole area is a big garden, decorated with small size water bodies and fountains. In the center there are some house like structures. We roamed around.

And this is the only pose we have for us, all of our photos are taken in this pose.

We walked to the back side of the area, and found it more interesting than the front. It had a pond with a fountain in the middle and elephant statue on each side.

After coming out through the main gate, we decided to have something to eat. Not many options in front of Saheliyon Ki Badi, so we had to fall back on liquids. Both of us got a can of Amul Kool Cafe.

A quick ride to Fateh Sagar brought us to the straight road alongside the lake. Took some pictures.

It was midday, so roaming around in the Sun proved to be quite tiring. Another auto ride brought us back to the hotel, where we rested for an hour before going out again.

next up Dudh Talai and Ropeway...

Day 4 : Udaipur

After some rest we start towards Dudh Talai. Quite a walk from our hotel.

It's a beautiful small lake with a hill backdrop. The temple on top, Karni Mata Temple is dedicated to the female sage Karni Mata.

We could see the gondolas making their trip downward.

I try to judge the road to take to reach the Ropeway station. We had to take right from the junction in front of Dudh Talai and continue on the same road. The left leads to the stairs to go to the hilltop.

We enjoyed the view for quite sometime. After a while, Nanda wanted to check out the temple. I started narrating about the story I read from internet about the temple and about Karni Mata.

Legends say that Karni Mata restored the life of her dead son, who was reborn as a rat. Since then all her relatives are reborn as rats and throng her temples. This specific temple was supposed to have special white rats.

Link : Temple on Heights: Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata | Udaipur

But, as soon as I mentioned rats, Nanda was terrified. So refused to go anywhere near rats, even if they are holy.

We decided to pray to Karni Mata from afar.

To mark our trip to the hilltop as successful we decided to have some food up there.

Me gulping down Chhole Bhature after waiting for 30 minutes after placing the order.

Soon afterward, we head back down, and then a long walk back to the hotel.

The evening is again spent leisurely at the cafe on Pichola. Dinner at the hotel and early to bed.

Tomorrow we will see Chittaurgarh.. the place both of us have been waiting for.

Day 5 : Chittaurgarh

Today we are going to visit the place we've been dying to see, Chittaur.

Nanda has been to Chittaur around 15 years back, but for me it is my first encounter with the biggest fort of Asia.

We started early after skipping breakfast, which was a mistake I would say, as we didn't find a single eatery on NH76. A quick drive through the city saw us on NH76. It was easy to go through the city as Chittaurgarh was marked almost at every junction.

Beyond the Horizon - An unforgettable trip from Bangalore to south Rajasthan-dscf0865.jpg

Beyond the Horizon - An unforgettable trip from Bangalore to south Rajasthan-dscf0871.jpg

The Udaipur Airport is situated on this road and we crossed it within few minute. Roads were deserted, and I mean really deserted. It was morning and we hardly met 4-5 trucks on the way to Chiitaur.

When we reached Chittaur the road confused us. But that is the whole point of having a GPS. Quickly checking the GPS puts us on the right road.
We came off NH79 to continue through the city, looking for directions to the fort.

On the main road towards the fort, suddenly the smell of Kachauri made us realize that we haven't had our breakfast.

We stopped for it and had couple of Kachauris with 500 grams of Jalebis, both hot, from a thelawala. Both tasted great, everywhere in Rajasthan Kachauri tasted great. We can surely come back once for Kachauris only.

After Kachauri and Jalebi feast, we continued towards the fort. The road started going up the hill, and there is our first sight of Chittaurgarh Fort.

Sunlight worked against us.

Beyond the Horizon - An unforgettable trip from Bangalore to south Rajasthan-dscf0880.jpg

Now comes the part of going through several gates one after another, at the same time climbing up the hill slowly.

A short history of Chittaurgarh:

We took a deep dive into the history of Chittaurgarh. I started remembering what I read from internet.

Chittaurgarh is believed to be built by the Mauryans in 7th Century, and later given to Bappa Rawal, the Sisodia Rajput leader, as dowry.

Chittaur was the Capital of Mewar for more than 800 years, till it got sacked by Akbar in 1567. It was sacked twice before by Ala-ud-din Khilji and Bahadur Shah. When Chittaur was sacked for the third time, the capital was moved to Udaipur.

This fort is the icon of bravery of Rajput males and sacrifice of the Rajpur females. Other than valor I could relate Chittaur to three things. Jauhar, Meera Bai, Maha Rana Pratap.

Jauhar was performed each time Rajputs were defeated. Meera was married to Chittaur and stayed here till here a considerable amount of time. Rana Pratap dreamed of reconquering Chittaur throughout his life. He reconquered almost all of Mewar back from Mughals except Chittaur.

With that broad history in mind, we reach the narrow streets of the village inside the fort.

It took us quite a while to see Kumbha Mahal. Although it looked like 90% of the structures have fallen, it was not too difficult to envision the grandeur of the palace in its days.

We started towards Vijay Stambh which could see not too far ahead..

Day 5 : Chittaurgarh

We got back to the car and started towards the Vijay Stamha. We didn't stop at Meera Temple, instead we continued towards Vijay Stambh.

Vijay Stambh :

Vijay Stambha was built by Rana Kumbha in 15th Century, commemorating his victory in battle. Wiki Link.

Lets take a look from a distance.

We started climbing up, but soon had to stop. It was a bright day outside, but inside it's a different story. It was pitch black after we climbed a few steps. We could hear people coming down the stairs, but no idea which way the stairs bent. With no source of light with us, we had to turn back.

This place was full of monkeys monkeying around.

This guy was different (Yogi in previous life ? )

Day 5 : Chittaurgarh

From Shiva Temple we start driving towards Kalika Mata Temple. This was a very crowded area, so we continue on the same road and soon find ourselves in the less visited part of ChittaurGarh.

We cross several fallen down structures and soon find ourselves at the southern most part of the Fort. From here the road turns to north again and goes towards Kirti Stambh. We follow.

This area reminds us of Hampi. Fallen structures everywhere.

Here are some of them.

Re: DAY 0.5 (NH4 - Bangalore to Mumbai )

What a conicidence!!! On the 24th of Dec '10 I was also crossing Mumbai en route to Kanyakumari. While waiting at the traffic lights I saw Hotel Fountain recommended by HVK right in front of me. But, since I had planned my night halt in Pune, I did not stop there.
Only difference is you guys crossed Mumbai on the morning of the 24th and I crossed it on Christmas Eve
