₪ On the Road: Guwahati - Shillong [photologue]

The road from Guwahati to Shillong is being widened and work is in full swing. This log will try to keep updating on the progress as well as giving a glimpse of places between the two state capitals.

The km sign at Jorabat where one needs to turn right. Lots of dhabas and a Police Station is here. The road is always jam packed from here upto Burnihat bridge check point, from where Meghalaya starts. Apart from the uncountable number of garages, factories and petrol pump, this stretch has a Sai Baba temple, Makhan Bhog restaurent and an Engineering college.

Re: ₪ On the Road: Guwahati - Shillong [photologue]

The road that I have traveled in a hundred times in the past! Good to see these pics! The road has changed a lot from the 1980-81 days which is the first recollection I have of a Shillong Guwahati journey but all is good I guess. Hope the work ends fast though. Earlier I remember doing the journey in 2 Hrs 25 mins, but this time it took me over 4 hrs to reach the Borjhar airport!

Re: ₪ On the Road: Guwahati - Shillong [photologue]

I traveled through this highway just last week while I was on a Northeast tour. It badly needs 4 lanes cuz the truck drivers drive so recklessly there! On the way to Shillong, I experienced over 2hrs of traffic because a truck broke down! When there are 4 lanes, the traffic flow would be very smooth. But I guess it's gonna take 3-4 yrs to complete.

Re: ₪ On the Road: Guwahati - Shillong [photologue]

@ Neel, Yes the charm of the 80's road is no longer there as most of the thick greenery has vanished and the air becoming warmer. Now AC cars are a must in summer time. Plus the Burnihat area's transformation into a industrial zone has added to the chaos.

@ Zohaib, 4 laneing was long due given high volume of traffic & the presence of notorious truckkers on this route. The locals put the time for compleation as 3years but may take longer due to the long rainy season. The construction team seems to be from Andhra and work goes on 24hours.

Here it begins. Slush, cut, remove, clear and my mean machine moves on. Other than dust therer's no problem as such for small vehicles right now. But once the rain starts, the tyres better be in good shape and brakes super strong.

As i left home just after brushing, nashta pani was necessary. So hers is the pit stop a little after the Burnihat bridge. Nice clean place where the owner himself made the alu matar for me. It was so good that i had to tell him when i left.

One lovely road. Been through it since 1982 and never ceases to amaze me for it's sheer beauty. It has had its ups and downs as far as the surface of the road is concerned, sometimes good sometimes bad, but a great driving road with lovely curves and adequate visability.

@ goan, negotiating the curves gives a great feel & i am happy that the widening would provide more visibility for a safer ride.

The road does lose its shape during the monsoon, but the state PWD guys are fast to repair.

Re: ₪ DeToUr #

If you have an off roader with monster tyres this is a good place to start the fun & bring in some back pain as well.

Re: ₪ On the Road: Guwahati - Shillong [photologue]

@Maddy, Roadinc is in the making of one of the greatest travelogue of the North East. It would be hard to beat him as he is touring NE for more than four months. He can write a new Lonely Planet of sort once he finishes his epic tour of the forbiddean frontier.

And no, could not crack the Services exam but was in the National Cadet Corps. Love the shade too much so had to do it ultimately.
