Re: Civved : Gavi

Day02, 27.08.2010
GAVI

We were talking about spotting more elephants and were deeply involved in that discussion a set of Gaurs ran down the hills in front of our jeep. Had they come towards the jeep...it is better not said. Why are these fellows after me? In Nelliyampathy one of these fellows had scared me to the hilts. And now a group of them.

Seemed that the Gaurs were hesistant to climb further. We were keenly looking out as to what is making them fear that they are not going forward...

Re: Civved : Gavi

GAVI

Mr. Varghese immediately finds the reason. Two wild elephants were up the hill.

We drove on further and reached a place that resembles a grass land. The grass are so tall that it can even hide an elephant. Here we found an elephant family. It was so much involving to watch them, and at the same time we were cautious not to demand undue attention from the male elephant as they were known to be very protective when the baby is around.

Mr. Varghese and me walked through the grass land daring the leech bites for a good look at them. But they were facing towards the hill and we waited for a while thinking they'll turn around.

Does anybody know why the wild elephants put mud on their body? Here the mud is reddish and the elephants look brownish due to that.

After waiting for half an hour, we decided to go further.

Thanks Laluks,
You have answered all queries. Though I have almost all your travelogues in my to do list.. not sure when I shall do them. Do share no of Mr. Varghese.
Also your pics are sort of movie to a spooky area and really worth a location for a horror movie. They are amazing and never seen before. They are really untouched and exposing them is the reason why Gaurs are angry with you or may be like to take an autograph from you .

Also the reason why elephants throw mud on their body is for various reasons like to reduce heat or to ward of blood sucking insects like bugs or leeches.

Beautiful place. I now know why one of my friends from Kumily always speaks about how wonderful Gavi is during the monsoons. And now after seeing the lovely pics, I have promised myself to do a trip to Gavi this year.

Thank You laluks. Wonderful thread. Rated it 5-stars !!

Nice shots Laluks. So for a change you handed over your camera to Mr Verghese and indeed he has done a nice job on the B&W!

Another Question: Is driving down to Gavi alone all the way from Bangalore or its better to club it with another one or two places? Based on what I see, I would add another place like Thekaddy or Vagamon.

Mr. Varghese is very enthusiastic with the camera. One of his foreign clients had understood his abilities and had gifted him, her digital camera before leaving Gavi. From that day he is very happy to go about showing his photographic skills. He is also very careful with the camera.

Gavi can be done in a days visit, or with an overnight stay. Mostly everybody takes 1 night as I could understand from them. But since my idea was to exit through the other route I wanted the second night to be there so as to start early morning from there.

Either ways, since you are driving 560Km from Bangalore, clubbing Thekkady before and Vagamon after is a good idea.
