Flamingoes - Flame Birds of Airoli, Navi Mumbai

Hi Folks! This is my first travelogue in Team BHP. Lets me introduce myself before writing a detailed travelogue. Basically, i am a Central Banker, working as an Economic Research Analist. Offlate, nature and wildlife has been taken over all other hobbies. To showcase and make people aware to save nature for maintaining ecological balance, i have taken up photographing them and presented to the large audiences, as far as possible for saving nature. All these i have started around August 2010 and visited Tiger Reserves like Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserves ( I will post detailed logs). May be going forward, we will know each other. Still then let me start a Photologue from my city, where i based since last ten years (basically i am from Orissa).
I have been planning to photograph Flamingoes in and around Mumbai for a long time. Gathered information that Sewri Mud flap is not allowed after terrorist attack. Once went to Airoli Creek in November 2010 but failed to find any flamingoes, because i did not know the exact place. After a long search, got contact number of a boat man, who takes inside the sea for watching flamingoes. I was too excited.
On Mahashivarati day i.e., March 2, 2011, a long dream came true, when i reached Airoli Creek for Flamingo photo shot.
Some Teaser Pictures.

Welcome Subrat.
Good to see you here finally after all your attempts of getting an entry. Be sure to go through the rules of posting as this is a very severely moderated forum unlike the others. Just a word of advice.

Will be following this thread closely. Please include all details possible so as to make a foolproof log which can form a benchmark to others interested in visiting the same area.

Enjoy your stay and keep up the good work of nature documentation and conservation.

Re: Flamingoes - Flame Birds of Airoli, Navi Mumbai

Good snaps. Waiting for the rest of them.
I have been to Sewri jetty a couple of times, but the flamingoes were so far off that even with a 10x binoculars, they were mere dots.
Would love to get some concrete information on whom to contact for hiring a boat, what are the approximate charges etc so that the next attempt is successful. Thanks in advance Subrat - SDP

Re: Flamingoes - Flame Birds of Airoli, Navi Mumbai

Thanks coooolcat, Abheek and SDP for a warm welcome. It will be an endevour from my side to keep all of you satisfied.

@ SDP: I had been to Sewri thrice this year, same experience like you. Flamingos are too far. This place is called Airoli Creek. To see Flamingoes, you need to hire a boat from the fisherman of that area that to in advance. The Boatman will give you particular time because it all depends on high tide of that particular day. He charges Rs.1500 for three hours boat ride.

It is a very good habitat for flamingoes. Flamingoes like, Juvenile, Lesser and Greater variety comes from Kutch after breeding to three places around Mumbai/Navi Mumbai i.e., Sewri, Uran and Airoli. Because of habitat degradation, hardly any birds comes to Mahul Jetty.

Anybody wants to visit Airoli area, i can PM the contact no of the Boatman.

Just one, request here. Be a nature lover first then a photgrapher or bird watcher. I mean to say, while visiting the particular area, be concern about conservation. Do not do anything which will affect the habitat, otherwise we may not see them after some time or monts or years.

Amazing photos there. Seems like a very nice place. Looking at the boat size, it must have been scary at times whence in the middle of the sea.

Waiting for more.

Re: Flamingoes - Flame Birds of Airoli, Navi Mumbai

Subrat,
Nice snaps. Thanks for the details about the boat. Would send you a PM for the contact details and name of the gentleman.
What was the closest you were able to reach, a 100 ft? or even closer?
The boat looks pretty small. Can it accommodate a family with 2 kids?

Re: Flamingoes - Flame Birds of Airoli, Navi Mumbai

@Gandhi: Thanks. It was not at all scary, may be i did not thought about the boat. I was busy through my viewfinder.

@GD1418: Thanks. Yeah, Mumbai has flamingoes at Sewri, Uran and Airoli.

@SDP: Sometimes 50 feet or even less. When we move in our boat, they keep flying around. Boat is preety small but can accomodate 4 adults comfortably.
