Re: Desert Storm 2011 - A competitor's log

I just discovered today that i20 comes with air bag disable switch. This kills the air bag sensors.

You can achieve the same results in SX4 by taking out the fuse from airbag circuit. I know many rally guys take out fuse for EBD+ABS for driving on the edge and slide handling.

Re: Desert Storm 2011 - A competitor's log

Awesome narration and kudos to both of you!

The moment I saw that this thread has no pics/vids I thought I'd be done reading this log in 5 mins (bits and pieces). But thanks to your narration the last 40 mins were a real treat.

Excerpts from you two's conversation takes the cake!

Yessir. Its something which i totally totally forgot. It was there somewhere in the back of my mind, but never made it to our checklist.

Unfortunately, now we have a burning reminder for the next round

The Fiat cars have an option in their car menus...

This has changed, managed to convince her to try it once more. So we're doing Dakshin Dare (May '11). Yay!

And to bring closure to this thread, here are some action pics. All photographs were taken by (the very awesome) Nitin Yadav, official photographer for Desert Storm 2011.

Re: Desert Storm 2011 - A competitor's log

@oldmonk - Absolutely riveting narration. Almost felt like I was there in the car running the route with you folks.

Sheer bad luck on the mechanical trouble especially when you were doing so well and had the driver-navigator rhythm all established. All the best for the next time!

Re: Desert Storm 2011 - A competitor's log

Those are some great shots!

Unlike raid-de-himalaya here you run with the original no. plate huh?

And is there any significance of those yellow stripes going all over to the A-pillar also?

No!! Writing doesn't come easily to me. May be will do a car-cam log. Anyway, DD doesn't promise to be as exciting as DS - mostly public tar roads, and probably no closed sections for TSD..

RDH - they stick the class name ("Extreme"/"Adventure") where the licence plates are. And ask competitors to get their own stickers of car registration number which have to be stuck on the bonnet.

Yellow - They are Maruti sponsorship stickers..

I told you so!!!
When you guys make such a wonderful team, there's no reason why you should not compete further. There's no scope for undoing what you guys have already achieved. There's only one way and that's forward.
Glad that you guys are doing Dakshin Dare!!
You have not updated the costs details ? will it come ?
And all the best for the competition.

EDIT: Wonderful snaps of your GV!!

Sorry for the delay. Some costs are approximate, +-5%

One-time:
1) GPS - Garmin 76CSX, external antenna, car mount - 30k
2) Terratrip - unit, probe, car mount - 15k
3) Safety/Recovery items (helmets, shovel, tow strap, rubber mats, bungee net, fire extinguisher etc.) - 7k
4) Calculation/navigation aids (pens, lanyards, velcro, exam board, rubber bands etc.)
5) 6th wheel - 4k
6) We also flew to Delhi and Mumbai to do Sudev's camps.

Once-in-a-while:
1) Tyres - Yokohoma Geolander A/T-S - 245/65 R17, 6 nos - 54k
2) FMSCI licences (once a year) - 5.8k
3) High risk medical insurance (once a year) - 1.6k

Recurring:
1) Rally entry fee - 35k
2) Fuel costs - don't have exact figures but was getting close to 11kmpl on highways (4000km) and 7.5-9 during the rally (1600km)
3) Rally add on cover - Rs. 30-50 / day

Hope this helps.

Wow - Almost 1 Lakh! I mean, I knew there was good money required, but not to this magnitude.

Thanks oldmonk!
yup this helps. So need to have around 2Lakh for the total thing including some contingency funds , that may arise like for e.g repair cost of vehicle.

mmxrider, it's not 1lakh, the amount is above 1.5Lakh and if you add the additional expenses over and above what oldmonk has stated, it will run upto 2 lakh.
