Re: Looking for the ever elusive Tiger in Tirunelly forest near Wayanad

Vinay is in JLR Kabani this week, it is raining frequently and sightings are very thin. He is on his 3rd day today, till now no luck with the big cats.

BTW. JLR have hiked the tariff to 5k per person for the tents now.

Regards,
Fazal Sab - Thanks for your appreciation, I am a keen follower of your travelogues and big fan of your wildlife snaps. Leopard spotting was near the tiger tank in Nagerhole and lasted only for few minutes. Dholes were spotted near the main road.

Fazal Sir,
The sighting we had was in the Kabini area (antharasanthe forest range, if I am not wrong) of Nagarhole Forest. The Leopard was below the Power Line, next to the Tiger Tank and this guy was huge.... If you see it from far, anyone will say it's a Tiger......

Was in Kabini for 3 nights/6 safari this week but Luck was worst this time. It's raining badly in Kabini and First sighting in the fifth safari only, that too after 6 PM & with rain, it was tough to take a good shot.

But luck was also playing, First safari missed tiger by 5 min at the Tiger Tank. It was there for 30 min and moved out just before we reached.
Then we followed line and saw the biggest paw mark I have ever seen of a Tiger, a BIG ONE. Reached a point where 2 Sambar standing next to my Gypsy giving a very loud alarm, The Tiger was in the bush but as it said, you can see the Tiger only when it want you to see. So again chance went away.

I am still talking about the first safari. Moved to the Kabini river side and there we saw the Orange Country Van standing near a bush. Using my lens, I could spot the two leopard cubs sitting inside a thick tree but it was just for record, cant take photo as you can see the spot, thats all....

Second & Third Safari was full of chasing alarm with No luck. We did the best and we got the worst because the other vehicle got 4 Tigers & 2 Leopards in just 45 min. Cant believe our ears.

Finally on Fifth Safari, we saw the female leopard sitting on a far bush and doing something unique, cleaning herself. It was raining heavily but still the 100-400 did the best in that worst weather.

So after 6 safari, I have shots of a Leopard, 3 Tuskers, Lot of Indian Gaur & a Indian Roller, Thatz all.

Photos will follow soon.

Ummm....wonderful snaps. Specially of the Leopard. The spotlighted Gaur during the night looks eerie in the picture adding some mystery.

Looking forward to the next set of pictures...

Re: Looking for the ever elusive Tiger in Tirunelly forest near Wayanad

Made another weekend trip to this lovely hidden place in Wayanad. Drive was my friend's Scorpio and stayed only for 1 night. They have added 2 more cottages (1 with 2 bedrooms and 1 single bedroon) to their existing list of 2 and can take 5 families now. There were elephants in field during night (1 Tusker and 1 mother and calf), but the party was spoilt by another group who started shining torches and shouting at the elephants..There were no other sighting on the road excpet for loads of deers, peacocks and a wild boar.

How do you expect me to have good snaps when you are not there for the trip. Let me check if I have snaps of the new cottages, nothing much on the wildlife!!!

Hi,

Am planning a route through Nagarahole.

Browsed your TLs with delight and hence pinging you, assuming that you have been there recently, post 2012 -TLs

Please update road conditions:

a. route SH 33: Mysore-HDKote Handpost-Bavali-Mananthavadi.

b. Hunsur-Nagarhole-Kutta

From a wild life viewing perspective, b should be a better bet ?

Thanks for your inputs.

Sorry, missed this query for few days. My last trip to this part was close to 3 months back, hope other BHPians can help with a recent update

a. Detour through the Village was getting repaired when I was there last time, not sure whether the repair was getting done for the whole stretch, . Except for this stretch, roads are excellent

b. This is in a good shape, there are some rough patches in the forest, but nothing to complain about

Sighting is a matter of luck and happens at the most unexpected moment is the thumb rule, but I was more lucky with option b.
