Hello guys. I was in search of a good new set of tyres for my vxi last week and had just 185/70 r14 in mind because of limited budget to upgrade to 15s. So went to a shop owned by dad's friend and was unable to decide between MRF ZVTS and JK VECTRA just when he suggested me to look at GT RADIAL 185/70 r14 88H CLASSIRO

At first felt the ride was very harsh but later was sorted as the culprit was improper air pressure suggested by the mechanic. I sticked to the pressure recomended on the sticker on the driver side door and now ride feels much better. The new tires have also lifted the handling and grip levels to a much greater extent. The car now carries much more speed with greater confidence around corners, got a chance last week to test on e-way and she holded lanes firmly at speeds above 165 with 6 on board.

@sagar_iswalkar: If you upgrade to 185s from 165s the top speed would come down instead and not increase, handling/cornering obviously gets better. BTW how much did these cost you? And if you've used other brands such as Apollo/Bridgestone in the past how would you rate these compared to them?

@fine69: Yes the speed should decrease as the distance covered in one complete rotation of wheel has reduced by 15.7mm(approx) i.e. because of decrease in height of the wheel by 5mm on 185/ 70s. But neither have I done any speed tests using any gps device nor did I get a chance to floor it properly. I only meant to say my Swift now feels much stable and gripped to the road at those speeds (on speedo) with 6 passengers onboard.
I didnt use any other brand before other than those stock JK Tornado so can't compare it with anything. This as told to me by the shop owner was an Indonesian brand and I just installed them with an intention to try something new and unknown.

The set of four costed me rs14400/-, 3600/- per piece.

Have a question. Any idea what would be the effect on speedometer reading now after switching to 185/70s?

If your speedo reads 100 your actual speed would be 99.19 because of the difference of -0.81% in circumference with the new size/aspect.

I had very worn out and tired tyres on my 2005 Swift VXi, I changed to Michelin Energy XM1+ 185/70/14. Used the existing steel rims. The purchase was done at Madhus (near Richmond circle, Bangalore), tyre change, balancing and alignment was done in 45 minutes flat (I was there at 9:45AM). Btw, Madhus is celebrating their 30th anniversary this whole month, and I got a very nice gift package. I also mentioned I am a member of Team-BHP and was given a discount on the tyres.

Hello Friends,

Need advice

My Swift needs to have its shoes changed & my dilemma is whether to go for Tire change only or to also get the rims replaced with alloys?

Swift that i own is now 3 years old (2008 make) & has clocked 44K with tires now giving in.

Would it be good idea to go for both Alloys & tires today if i want to continue with the same car for atleast a year or two? Or just to have the tires upgraded to ZXI size (R14/70/185)

I got my set of Michelins today - 185/70/R14 for my ZXi. Cost me 4500 per tyre in Chennai. Felt the comfort and softer ride straight away, when compared to my stock 5 year old JK tyres. I had clocked 24.5K on my older set.

There was an excellent set of alloys and Yokohama shoes listed on the classifieds two days back by a fellow Bhpian from mumbai, It is a steal at 28k just check it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Checked them and found the width of tire 205 not to my liking as 195 is better than 205 in terms of comfort. Also i own a red swift, black alloys does not gel well with my car's color (personal view).

Wise decision, it is not advisable to buy second hand wheels as one never knows what kind of abuse the same have been through. The perfect upgrade for you would be the 185/70R14 in the same rim dia. You could also go with 195/60R15 if you want to go a size bigger.

My Swift Vdi is running on 185/70/R14 XM1. Now done some 56K on them and i think its time for a change. I have always thought that 16"ers fill up the wheel arches well and looks real nice on a swift !
How does 195/55/16 sound ? Thats the size the new verna is coming with. Some Bridgestone B250 i think and the tires seem to be decent .

This size is better than 205/50 ? I understand that 205/50/16 is too big a size and causes some suspension related problems after a while.

Im very exited to find out if we can get 195/60/15 kinda ride quality and performance from 195/55/16 ?

One of the main difference between Hyundai Verna & Swift is the suspension. Verna has a soft suspension while that of Swift is relatively stiff thus providing Swift a lot better cornering ability than Verna. So even if Verna has put up tyres with lower aspect ratio, suspension take care that the ride is relatively smooth, while in Swift its not the case.

If you are planning to go 195/55/R16, then the grip level would remain the same as 195/60/R15 but the aspect ratio(the ratio of the side wall height to the tread width) would be 55 rather than 60 meaning, there should be a noticeable difference in terms of ride quality. 60 giving better ride quality than 55 as the tyre has higher wall height to take on the bumps or bad roads.

Any tyre with aspect ratio going below then the standard would compromise to some extent on the ride quality, however the grip of the car on higher speeds would be better due to wider tyres (like 195, 205).

It would be best if you can test drive someone's car who already has this setup to get a feel. Else would recommend as has been recommended by many other BHPians to go for 195/60/R15(better compromise between ride quality & grip on road). Choice is yours

Hi Where did you get the tires? i am too looking to change my vdi's 165 to 185 very soon. but what shocked me was 3 months back michellins costed 4k then,a month back it was 4200 and you say its 4500 now

I checked with about 3-4 Michellin dealers in Chennai and all of them told me the same price. One chap in T Nagar (Chennai) offered 1000 Rs. discount if buying 4 tyres, but when I called him for actual purchase, he had no stock...

I finally bought my set from TyreStore on Greams Road. I had picked up my Qualis XM1+ there too, last year...
