Wrong. Most of the chrome alloys are not nickel plated but chrome painted. Also the wheel itself is not made of only Aluminium. It is made of a Magnesium & Aluminium alloy. Only the really expensive brands of alloy wheels are actually chrome plated.

i don't deny that but i was making it simpler for the member to understand. that's why i said can't be explained in one line ! but am sorry even expensive brands can't do hardchrome on Al + Mg alloys , for eg wheels fom Weld , USA do hard chrome on wheels but then they are not Al+Mg but are forged steel rims.

We are going OT here. But nickel & hard chrome are not the same thing. By saying this you are only mis-guiding people. No more discussion from me about this topic over here.

as far as i know , first any metal is plated with a layer of nickel and then it gets chrome plated , as chromium will not adhere directly on to the base metal.

The base metal is first copper plated and then chrome plated. Chrome plating adheres best to copper. But if cost is a criteria then nickel is used.

Expensive brands do what i have mentioned above.

Also it is not necessary for forged rims to be only steel. You also get Al. + Mag forgings. All racing quality light weight wheels are Al + Mag forging or are machined out of solid forged billets.

Mirror shine is got by buffing & polishing. The amount of shine is controlled by using different grit buffing wheels. For matt finish they use a lower grit wheel and for mirror polish they use a higher grit wheel.

Mods: Can you please move our posts to the Alloy Wheel refinishing thread. There is one thread which deals with this but I could not find it.

Never seen a forged steel wheel so far. All forged wheels are magnesium/aluminium/combo from what I have seen.

Guys, if anyone has a chance to see the new 2009 Yongle catalogue, see it!
The new designs are amazing; sadly nothing for the SX4, at least none of the ones I liked.
