Just to clarify a little better.

The driving power train -- the driveshafts and the final drive gears within the transaxle, drive the road wheels through gearing.

The speed of the car -- its road wheels -- is derived by measuring the rotational speed of this power train.

A flexible cable taps onto the final drive gear in the transaxle.
Your speedometer and odometer are driven by this spinning speedometer cable.

The measurement assumes a certain factory-set gearing.
Changing the diameter of the tires will cause the overall gearing and the indication to go wrong.
And this is what has happened in your case with the slightly oversized tires which are indicating a slightly lower speed.

If you still want to know the correct road speed, use a GPS application software such as Nokia Sports Tracker software with your Nokia phone (S60 3rd edition), with built-in or external GPS satellite receiver).
It measures true speed by computing near-instantaneous incremental change in position per incremental change in time.

Given my parameters below which set of tires can i choose for my 800 ('97 model)
1-Broad profile (like my existing MRF Zigma CC)Other tires i have observed seem to be a bit narrow and skinny than my MRF.I like the fat tire look.
2-High puncture resistant.12 years my MRF's have punctured 4 times.
Though my car is not high mileage but still even with time the rubber will wear out
3-Grip and tire noise is of no issue to me as i do not corner hard and do not indulge in stunt driving and my free flow exhaust drowns the tire noise anyways :-)
4-Value for money.Something which will not burn a hole in my wallet.
5-Long tire life.

So guys what do you,i should go for if i were to go for new ones.My front tires are just fine however rear onc's will need replacement soon.

Finally got myslef a pair of new Zigma CC Radials.I know some (probably most) of you will agree are the Zigma's are not really that great pairs pf tyres but at that price (1375) each they are not that bad.I guess they are basic but get the job done,besides switching to a different brand would have meant buying atleast 2 pairs.( i only purchased 1 pair for the front as the rear ones had worn out)The old last pair was maafactured in Aug 97 (yes had them all those years),they ran for nearly 28,500 kms.One of the tyres had faced a cut hence i decided to switch to newer ones.

Did the dealer also sell you butyl rubber inner tubes?
I don't have a single puncture repair on my inner tubes till date. Very satisfied with the Zigmas on my M800.

The tyres came with the tube and everything else.The older tubes were
given back to me as spare.Yes the Zigmas give adequate grip and decent
performance and are very durable.I have driven a pair for the last 12 years.:)

I am looking for standard 145/70 R12 tubeless tyres for my well past due 54000 K old/8yr old JK tyres on my 5 speed 800.

Could you guys recommend the available options(brands) in this size and also some shops in bangalore which stock them.

After some front suspension work, i noticed that the ride was slightly bumpy even on good, flat roads in my 5 speed 800. MASS suggested everything was fine with the suspension and tire change will solve the problem though the tires look okay for another 5000 kms. Took a second opinion from another MASS and they too suggested tire change quoting tires have become hard and the wear is uneven.

I visited a small tire shop near E.City who quoted in the range of Rs. 1450 for Ceat, Apollo, Goodyear, and JK for the normal size (145/70R12) and he is ready to buy back the current tires though he did not commit the price. MASS quoted Rs. 2100 for Bridgestone with no buy back of the current set.

My requirement is....
1. I have no intention to upgrade the size.
2. I will be changing only 4 tires, stephney will remain the same.
3. My current set of tires are JK, so would like to try another brand.
4. I have heard from few mechanics that MRF tires become hard rather too soon.........is it true?
5. Between Ceat and Apollo, which one is better and is Rs. 1450 the right price?
6. I am ready to stretch my budget little bit if Bridgestone is much better than these 2 brands.
7. I am also open to other brands that u feel are better than these 3 brands.
8. Is it a must to change the tubes during tire change?


Awaiting ur suggestions so that i have some knowledge before i go shopping around Lalbagh Road and JC Road.

MRF is known to be a hard compound. Ceat and Apollo should be ok, if you want to save money. You can consider GoodYear too. Bridgestone should be better. Better still would be Yokohamas, Michellin. Please remember, views can differe widely about tyres. So use your own discretion.

Tube change is definitely recommended for safety. Better still, go tubeless.

Apollo is decent enough. In GoodYear go for the GT770+ tyre.

Hmm, the Ceats I'v seen did feel less harder to touch at least. But that could be due to due to difference in age...

I have read this thread multiple times, it gets more & more confusing

I have few straight forward questions:

1) Maruti 800 default Tyre size is 145/70R12?

2) Which upgrade is better, 145/80R12 or 155/70R12?
One has more height & other has more width.

3)145/70R12, means side walls will be 70% of 155 i.e. 101.5
155/70R12, means side walls will be 70% of 155 i.e. 108.5
145/80R12, means side walls will be 80% of 145 i.e. 116

Are these differences huge? If I see, upgrade to 155/70R12 also gives me more side walls. However upgrade to 145/80R12 gives me only side walls!

Is 155/70R12 a better deal than 145/80R12?

4) What are specific pros & cons of these upgrades on Steel Rims/Alloy Rims for a 800cc car?

5) What are specific pros & cons on each of Tyre size considering profile upgrade, width upgrade, grip, power, fuel economy, possible changes to suspension, accelerated wear & tear, etc.

It would be huge help if these are answered as it can make a buy very clear. Also tyres are once which take all the beating of the road. Also its 1st step to safety.

Bangalore or rather Indians roads have drastic variety hence tyre should be ALL ROUNDER
- Roads with
- HUGE pot holes
- Dirt Roads
- High Speed highways, easy to touch top speeds
- Indians are big family with big luggage, hence load capacity :-)
- Heavy rains & roads flooded with rain/drain waters

Imported tyres & tyres mainly designed for Non-Indian roads may not be aware of our conditions.

I have few more questions, but will hold it as it will make things complex :-S
