I am a proud owner of an XUV5OO W8 and just completed 15000 kms in 6 months. I am also doing a 3500 kms mum-del road trip next month.

This is about the time I start to do research on my next tyre replacement. In my experience of over 300-400k of driving, I have realised the importance of the right tyres too late..

My last car - SX4 did an amazing 100k within 3.5 years and the latter half of the drive was far more pleasant thanks to Yoko db550 rubber.

Coming to the point of contention. So my XUV came fitted with the Apollo Apterra H/P 235//65//17s

I was disappointed to see this when I took delivery of the vehicle as I was expecting a minimum of Bridgestone Duellers (IMO better suited to an SUV of this size for both ride quality and handling). I requested for a replacement but they were unable to help.

Luckily, me and my friend were buying 2 XUVs together and guess what...his car came fitted with the Duellers!

Upon delivery, I checked the vehicle and all was well except, I was just a tad unhappy with the ride comfort. The car was pitching a lot on potholes and uneven roads felt hard. Surprisingly, the same roads felt more comfortable in my friends's XUV.

I wanted to change my tyres asap but realised this is not a sedan any more. A 5 tyre replacement would cost me a whopping 50-60k INR!!

So I decided to do best with what I have and am driving with the same Apterra. However, I am looking to change them around the 35k mark (I know a tad early but I really want a better ride quality).

When I went for a preliminary market survey for tyres, I realised there are actually limited choice for my configuration - 235//65//17

There are the standard OEMs and the specialist international brands.

I tried searching the TBHP forun for a good thread on XUV tyre replacement but did not find much. Hence I am starting this forum where experts and XUV owners can share their experiences with various tyre brands and more importantly advise on the right replacements.

So, to summarise, the following OEM choices are available:

JK Tyre Elanzo - ~11k INR
Apollo Apterra H/P - ~11k INR
Bridgestone Dueler - ~15k INR

I was surprised to see such a big gap between Bridgestone and other OEMs. No wonder XUVs now shipping with cheaper tyres. Although they should have maintained standards on atleast the W8s.

A surprise entry was Hankook Dynapro H/P ~12k INR. I dont have any experience with this brand and any comments/service issues/experiences are welcome

What was even more surprising is the gap between local and foreign brands. Here is a summary:

Michelin Latitude Tour H/P - ~22.5k INR
Pirelli Scorpion Verde - ~17k INR
Falken Wildpeak HT01 - ~16k INR

I am also aware of the newly launched Ceat SUV tyres but just dont have the confidence yet. FYI the XUV5OO equivalent is called the Ceat Czar H/T

I am so far tempted to go for the Pirellis @ 17k as it seems to offer a good mix of price to quality.

I think it is the need of the hour to hear some experiences and user opinions. Please enlighten on the following:

1. Specific tyre experiences by XUV owners (Both OEM and Replacements)
2. Any tyre options I may have missed above? Pls note the peculiar config
3. Suggest tyres that improve ride quality

I don't know where you have got these quotes from, but I know SDP got Latitude Tour HPs for his XUV for around 15k a tyre. Compared to that the quote you have seems exorbitant.

As compared to 3 years back, there are lots of options available in 235/65 R 17. I recently changed tyres on my W8 after clocking 30K on the stock JK Elanzos. I got Michelin Latitude Tour HP for 15K INR per tyre. Its been barely 2 weeks, but I am very happy with them. The road noise has simply vanished.

I was offered Pirellis (for some 17-18K INR per tyre) , Yokohama Advan ST2 (19K per tyre) and even Continental (don't remember the price) besides the standard options like JK, Apollo, Bridgestones and Yokohama Geolanders.

Even in Michelins, you get Latitude Cross (not recommended) , LTX82 (not available in India) in XUV size.

The Latitude our HP I picked up are for 90% highway usage and 10% rough roads. If your usage needs more off-roadability, you might have to pick up something else.

The Latitude Tour HPs were going for 19-20K INR per tyre a few months back and apparently have seen a price-cut recently. So please do check with other dealers. Here's a link to post in my thread which talks about my tyre-change experience:

Hi SDP. Thanks for this. I might go for the Mich's. Since you are also from Mumbai I wanted to ask. How has your XUV done on the NH17. This isnt the smoothest of roads and due to constant construction/repairs has various uneven patches. I just came back yesterday and noticed that every single unevenness from the road was felt in the cabin. Do you think the Mich's will resolve this?

On your suggestions, my car is 45% city driving, 45% highway and 10% soft road, so Mich's might be perfect.

Very enlightening reading this thread. I have Apollo Hawkz 235/65/R17 for my XUV W8 and it has run about 16K kms so far without any problems. I have not experienced any undue squealing or over noisy interiors. Since I have not driven any other XUV with a different brand of tyres it is a little difficult to draw any kind of comparison.

I had just been on a weekend trip to the Bhadra Wildlife Santuary and on the way back, near Kunigal on the Hassan Bangalore 4 lane, I had a puncture on the front left tyre. Fortunately there was a repair shop just a few kms away and since the air was not rushing out of the tyre, I drove slowly over and saw that the sidewall had been punctured. The shopwalla said that this is typical "road reflector" puncture, i.e., it was caused by one of the road reflectors having a sharp edge. So I got it replaced with the spare and drive home without any further incidents.

When I went to a nearby JK Tyres retail outlet, the mechanic there fixed the puncture and I asked him to fit it back as the spare, as I didn't want to take a chance on the tyre. On the way back home, the right rear tyre showed dropping pressure, so I immediately drive back to same outlet and to my horror, there was a puncture on that tyre as well. Now what is the probability of that?? Cursing my stars, I got that fixed too. It was on tyre face, so the mechanic said I can drive without worrying too much about it.

So now I have a fixed running tyre as well as a fixed spare tyre. Do you guys think I can run like this for some more time? My driving is 80% city with 20% highway driving and I regularly hear the sweet beeping sound on the highways.

Even if I replace my tyres is it absolutely necessary to replace all five of them at the same time? I have three good tyres, so can I use one of them as spare, two of them as running and two new ones?

Any advice is appreciated.

The side wall puncture, if it is due to a cut by a reflector, then nothing much can be done about it. Not the tyre's fault. You should not worry about the quality of tyres based on that one incident.

The other puncture is a normal phenomenon.

I would say, just run with the same setup, with the sidewall puncture tyre as spare.

If you have to change tyres, as you mentioned, get 2 new ones and put them at the front. But if you ask me, change of tyres is not really warranted in this scenario.

Guys, any feedback for XUV tyres especially - Michelin, Continental & Falken? How is Goodyear Wrangler? My ride is demanding the change of tyres and I am seriously confused since there are no feedbacks about it except Michelin. The dealer advised to go for Continental than Michelin. Price for Michelin at 15.5k and Continental at 16k.

Yes its really good . especially while travelling in high speed . & recently traveled to Kodaikanal it gives 13.8 milage. Ride is more comfortable more grip. 26000kms. No hesitation while recmending this tyre.

You may consider EU labelling for tyres if you want to find a tyre which is fuel efficient , grippy and silent.

I have noticed that the apollo apterra HP seems to have high rolling resistance as per the EU Labelling (EU rating for the tyres)
Fuel Efficiency is rated E ( A is the best) , wet grip - C ( A is the best), noise level -71db ( this seems to be ok).

After my research for a better rated economical tyre in terms of fuel efficiency ( rolling resistance), wet grip and noise , I could see that the online portal www.tyreonwheels.com has 255 * 60* 17 Nexen Roadian HP for less than Rs 10K.

It's ratings goes like this : Fuel Efficiency - C, Wet grip -B and Noise 75.

So nexen can be an efficient and economical option for those who are looking for a replacement.

I have had Apollo Hawks on my W8 for almost 2 years and 41k Kms now. 3 months ago started getting punctures on these tires ( 5 on one tire and 4 on the other) they look like there is still life left in them but am thinking of getting 3 new ones and put one of the older ones as a spare. But reading through this thread, I guess I should do a bit more research. My mileage all this while has never been more than 12. I don't know if these Apollo tires are responsible for the same. Anyone else with Apollos facing similar low mileage issues?? Please do share
