Goodyear Tyres Concept: Electricity Generation & Variable Tyre Pressure

Goodyear has revealed two new tyre concepts at the 85th Geneva motor show. Named “BHO3”, the first concept focuses on the rising popularity of electric vehicles and targets a reduction in the travel range limitation faced by EVs. The concept offers the possibility of charging the batteries of electric cars by transforming the heat generated by the rolling tyre into electrical energy. Goodyear says the materials used would optimize the tyre’s electricity generation capabilities as well as its rolling resistance.

The second concept named “Triple Tube” – contains three tubes that adjust tire inflation pressure in response to changing road conditions. The tyre relies on an internal pump that moves air from the main air chamber to the three individual air tubes. Depending on the road conditions, the tyre adjusts itself to 3 preset positions:-
  • Eco/Safety: Maximum inflation in all three tubes to reduce rolling resistance.
  • Sporty: Reduced inflation within the inboard shoulder tube to enable a greater contact patch and thereby better handling.
  • Wet Traction: Maximized inflation in the centre tube to improve wet road traction and aquaplaning resistance.
