hello 4x4addict,
Have you upgraded the tyres, and if yes, to which brand/model and specification?

Hi friends,

I am getting a new GX MT and I would like to upgrade my tyres from 205/65R16 B390 to Bridgestone Duelers, preferably A/T. I am looking for A/T version mainly because of thicker sidewalls, since these days roads in the city as well as remote destinations are poor and when we travel on kuchcha roads (sometimes with large stones) with full load, there is a reasonable chance of sidewall cuts.

However, in India, A/T seems to be available only for size 215/75 R15 100S according to Bridgestone India website. There are other Dueler variants but all H/T ones.

I choose D689 (among the D68* variants) for the aggressive looks of the tread pattern and I find 215/65 R16 available with least variance in circumference.
  • Do you suggest any other brand/ model/variant with A/T spec?
  • And if you happen to have upgraded your own Crysta GX tyres, then what other sizes have you gone for?

thanks in advance

Not yet. But, I have decided to go for the 225/60/16 as it is the closest that I can get to the stock OD of 205/65/16. See the attached comparision below:

If you are intending to upsize on stock alloys please note that these are 6J wheels and 215 is the max recommended tyre width for this wheel size. When I had 215/65/16 Primacy SUV it had a slight but noticeable bulge.

Michelin LTX Force is not an AT tyre but it is an alternative you can consider if you wish to go for a semi rugged style of tyre in 215/65/16.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

hello folks

I find the following, whereas according to Toyota specification, the laden weight is 2460 kg (for the GX MT variant, 2480 kg for AT variant ) that the load index of stock tires, for example, Bridgestone B390 is 205/65R16 95H, is "95" which can handle a load capacity of just 690 Kg. By common sense, if I multiply by 4 (for 4 tires) the load capacity comes to just 2760 kg which is just 300 kg more than the laden weight.
When the Innova Crysta, then travels with full load, say 7 or 8 folks with an average weight of say 70 kg (just an assumption) and a luggage load of say 50 kg (say) , approx ~ 600 kg more than the laden weight, the total load comes to 2460+600 kg = 3010 kg which is roughly 250 kg shorter than the calculated load capacity.

OTOH, I used to own a Xylo and stock tires were Bridgestone Dueler D693II A/T 215/75 R15 and its load index is 100 which translates to 800 kg per tire which means, for 4 tires the load capacity is 3200 kg whereas the minimum laden weight is 2495 kg (picked from Xylo H series manual) and there seems to be sufficient difference of approx ~700kg.

Could this explain the reason behind the tire bursts seen on smaller side walled tires (16" or 17" rim sizes)?

Should then we look for higher load index tires? I am unable to find higher load index tires for 205/65R16 or 215/65R16 that come with say load index 100. The Michelin Latitude Force tire's load index is not mentioned on Michelin's website, even then, the cost per tire is 10000/- (too exhorbitant, can you share your price if you have fitted them? ). And BTW, Bridgestone Dueler D689 H/T comes with 98 which is around 750 kg per tire. Any suggestions for 215/65 R16 size tires with around 100 load index (800 kg per tire)?

thanks in advance

Hi Sankar, Friends

All this while I was planning to upgrade to 215/65 R 16 but as you say stock wheel size is 6J and I find many websites recommending max tyre size to be 205/65 R16 and not 215/65 R16, now I am confused whether to go ahead or retain existing tyres.

For example, this link shows
Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-max-tyre-size-6j-wheels.jpg
And the max recommended size is 205/65 R16.

However, the recommended rim sizes for tyre size 215/65 R16 shows 6J wheels too.
Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-recommended-wheel-sizes-215-65-r16-tyre-size.jpg
Confusing.

You say you see a noticeable bulge with the upsized tyres.
1) would this upsizing break the warranty?
2) would this upsizing require us to take precautions like avoiding overloading the car, or avoiding driving on bad or off roads?

thanks in advance,

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Rajesh, you can use 215/65/16 without any worry on the stock 16"wheels. The opening post on this thread has these tyres mounted on the 16"wheels. I have had these for a while till I upgraded to 17" wheels and not a single issue. The bulge i mentioned is noticeable if looking for it otherwise one would miss it, 215 is the max width this wheel can take.

The ride was very good when I had Primacy SUV 215/65/16 compared to the 225/55/17 Primacy 3ST i have now, handling wise the latter is better since it allows for lesser sidewall flex and lesser roll.

Hi Sankar,
Thanks.
I went to Madhus, at Langford Road and changed to Duelers D684 215/65 R16 today. Damage of Rs 26000/-. The buyback price of 5 tyres at Rs. 4000/- each was Rs 20000/- and new tyres purchase at Rs. 9200/- each was Rs. 46000/-.

Tyres look beefy and have good sidewall. They fill the wheel wells nicely and thus now the Crysta looks better.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi All, Have booked Crysta 2.8Z AT and thinking of changing the tyres on day of delivery. Stock is 215/55 R17 and tyre dealer suggests 215/60R 17. Many threads in the groups suggest 225/55R17. Can someone help me with the best option? Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Have a couple of questions:
- Does the Crysta have an alignment issue, inherently? I have done 58k kms and the tires have worn out on the inside; otherwise they have about 4mm tread.

- I am looking for low noise, comfort, grip, mileage & life, in that order. What would be a good tire that meets those requirements? I am really not very comfortable changing the standard specs of the tire from the factory

Any information about Pirelli P6 with respect to my requirements?

- What is the diffference between Bridgestone Duellers vs 390?

Rajesh: why did you change from B390 to Duelers? Size only or some other reason?

Thanks in advance

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

A request for information:

I went and had a look at Bridgestone B390 & Yokohama Earth1 tires in stock size

Both are around ₹ 6500

Any opinion on either? Which is better for largely city use (70:30 city:highway) ?

Is the price okay?

Also any opinion on the Bridgestone guy (Tire Smart) at the corner of HDFC bank on ORR in HSR, before the Agara petrol bunk? The same guy is selling both

Any feedback on their alignment & wheel balancing?

Please let me know. Thanks

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

My Innova Crysta is due for tyre change. My stock size is 205/65 R16. Can I go for 225/60 R16 Michelin Primacy 4ST? Will the stock alloys be able to handle 225/60 width?

Hi Shubham, did you go ahead with the upsizing? I am also thinking of going for the same tyres i.e Primacy 4ST 225/60 R 16 on my Crysta having the same Stock size. Did your stock alloys suit the 225 width?

Mine are ok, no issues. Maybe due to incorrect alignment which is a possibility. Once after wheel alignment at the toyota dealer during a routine service the vehicle came home with a visible negative camber on the front wheels. That was corrected.

215 is the maximum recommended width on OEM 16"alloys.
Similarly 225 is the maximum width recommended on the OEM 17" alloys.

People have used larger section tyres on the stock wheels, but they fall out of the recommended rim width range for OEM alloys and bulge out excessively.

How are the new Dueller tyres on your crysta? Do you recommend them?

Yes of course, as I mentioned I have run two innings of Duelers tires (albeit a different model D693 mark II which are A/T tires) on my Xylo. On Innova Crysta, they give a firm grip, feel more confident on straight line braking. The tires do tend to make cornering heavy (this model is H/T and so perhaps it behaves that way) compared to the lighter B390s but this is an MPV and not a hatchback. I am happy.

Folks like Shankar have recommended Michelin Latitude which I saw in person at the shop and they too have good construction and perhaps may give a softer ride but life of tread may be slightly lesser compared to the Duelers. I wanted the tires with thicker sidewalls so as to avoid shoulder punctures or side cuts as they happen often on kuccha roads with sharp stones. Amongst the lot, Duelers is always recommended for thick sidewalls.
