Re: Replacing just 1 tyre?

Hi,

My car came with 195/55 R16 Tyres, all made in 2020 and hardly run 4,000 KMs since then.
I wanted to upgrade these tyres to 205/55 R16 when it's time.
Spare tyre is a 185/55 R15.

Recently Front-right tyre sufffered a side-wall tear and I'll have to replace it.
I don't want to buy a 195 section tyre since I always wanted to replace it with 205 section.
Since there is lot of life left in all other 3 tyres (has barely run 4K KM), I don't want to change all of them,at least not NOW.

What would be the next best option, considering that the existing tyres are still new and also I want to upgrade to 205/55/R16?
1. Move 195-section rear tyres to front and buy 2 new 205/55/R16 tyres for the rear?
2. Change only the damaged tyre (with same spec. 195/55/R16)?
3. Replace all 4 tyres with 205/55/R16 and discard the 3 original tyres?

I'm inclined towards option.1, but will it cause any ride/handling issues with this option since the tyres don't match?

Provided vitamin M isn't a problem, I would suggest selling all your existing tyres and replacing all 5 with 205/55. Unless the 205/55 won't fit in the spare tyre location, it is better to have the spare the same size so that you don't face issues.

The second option is to replace the damaged tyre only. Do not have different sized tyres at the front and rear unless your car is designed for that. It will cause problems in the long run with suspension and potentially chassis

Spare tyre is a 185/55 R15.
Which car is this? Ciaz? Baleno? i20? Verna?

Re: Replacing just 1 tyre?

The right upsize which is within the tolerance limits is 205/55/16.
Best would be to keep the best one amongst the 195’s as your emergency spare.
Sell off the others and the existing 185 size spare for whatever fair price you can get. There are plenty of tyre shops and puncture repair places who will buy these. There is a good market for these old tyres especially in the highways because at various times, people experience tyre tears and need replacements in a hurry.
Then buy yourself what you’ve always wanted, a set of 4 tyres in the 205/55/16 size. I suggest consider the MRF Perfinzas. They are an excellent tyre. Silent. Grippy. Great quality.

I think he would have to retain the 185/65R15 spare. Otherwise he would need to invest in a 16 inch rim.

Good point. Leave the spare as is.
As an emergency only. Buy a tyre inflator and a puncture repair kit.
Sell off the 3 Nos 195’s and throw away the one with the sidewall tear.
Buy 4 nice new 205’s as he has always desired.

I ll not advocate changing just one tyre. Atleast change 2 tyres so that both the tyres on the same axle are of the same brand and of even wear.
Of course if the tyres are going to be changed to 205’s then all 4 have to be changed. No other way.

I wouldn't complicate a simple problem. Your tyres have barely run 4000kms. Just replace the damaged tyre with the same size and brand. Run the same setup and upgrade everything when it's time.
