Cheap Chinese tyres may be to blame for Russian armoured vehicles getting stuck in mud

More details here

Note - the article is conjecture and no proof is clear on this fact. Summarising

  • Corrupt Russian officers may have saved cash on tyres for their trucks and armoured vehicles by opting for cheap Chinese alternatives.
  • The poor quality of the tyres has meant Russian vehicles often get mired in difficult terrain, slowing the military advance as the weather turns wetter.
  • NATO vehicles use Michelin XZL tyres, but China's version of the tire is the Yellow Sea YS20, of significantly poorer quality.
  • A set of 50 Michelin XZL tyres retails on Alibaba at approximately $36,000, whereas 50 sets of the Chinese equivalent retails at around $208.
  • Potential tyre ruptures may be forcing the Russian army to stick to roads to else risk losing their armoured cars in the muck, leaving them more exposed to drone attacks and military ambushes.
  • Crimea and south Ukraine is dryer with terrain posing less of a risk for the Russian military, but wet conditions pose a challenge elsewhere in the country

The $208 surely cannot be for 50 tyres isnt it? $208 is about 15k INR, which makes me believe it's for 1 tyre. So possibly for 50 tyres would be about $10k. That's still over 3 times cheaper but certainly believable.

The cost difference in India was about 50% different several years ago. Now, I am not sure but it appears that other Indian brands have filled up the value segment and Indians (even taxi guys) just go for more reliable Indian brands than chinese as the difference is not much.

May be our Indian manufacturers should sell tyres to Russia. 90% michelin performance at 50% of the cost!!!

A very queer situation there. But the dubious quality of the Chinese tyres need to be thanked as these have saved lots of gullible lives and property from potential damage in Ukraine. We hope that they would use more and more of these as Western sanctions on Russia won't allow the Soviets to buy acclaimed brands.

Vintage car owners tempted to get the period looks for their cars with white wall tyres have also been duped by middlemen at times, when crap quality Chinese tyres were unsuspectingly supplied. There are reports that these tyres got themselves compulsorily retired, after getting tired and tattered within the first few hundreds of kms of use, within months. Some owners also reported how they were on the brink and averted mishaps.

White wall tyres of Indian makes used by vintage car owners are no longer available and imports from the Western markets are the only way out for the desirous.
