re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

Manual or computerized, technician is the key to ensure alignment is perfect. You may have best equipment but if the technician is not good, results are not going to be good. Bad alignment gets amplified on highway, so if there is long stretch close to alignment center to test after alignment, will be beneficial. If the results are good and cost is similar, manual/computer should not matter.

Cost for the customer is similar - this shop charged me Rs. 300 for the alignment. From the business owner point of view, manual alignment machines/infra would be significantly cheaper to setup. But:

- Manual alignment is a two person job, especially towards the end when a guy turns the steering wheel left/right and moves the vehicle back and forth. The second guy is under the car checking something.

- Manual process takes a longer time, especially since the technician always goes on a test drive after the alignment. Even after coming back from the test drive, he makes some minor adjustments and only after that, the job is done. So manual equipment does not have the high productivity of 3D laser machines.

I don´t believe in the modern alignment equipment cannot solve the problem. They absolutely can when handled by right professional.

Drawing parallels:
It is just like photography. A good photographer with a basic camera can make a good picture. But someone without the understanding of light, story and composition, cant make a good picture even if they have the best or most expensive camera in the world. I believe in a good photographer with best camera can make a great picture.

Re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

My first car was a Peugeot 309GLD. I took it to a specialist in Coimbatore from Chennai for service and general checkup. The Mechanic did the alignment with thread. Same principles as an electronic alignment. Rear tyre setting is assumed constant and a fine thread used along the body extending beyond the front tyre to fine tune front wheels. Car did run good and straight.

Like for every profession it is the skill of the person involved that matters.

Re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

There is one more manual wheel alignment center near JP nagar metro station. It's called 'Perfect wheel alignment'. After I got new tyres for my figo, the tyre shop didnt do the alignment properly. Ride used to be bouncy and unsettling. Even after 2-3 visits, they gave lame excuses like 'new tyre are like that, more cushion effect' blah blah. This shop was suggested to me by a senior ex maruti service person who has his own garage now near my house.

Got the alignment done here Nd no issues post that. Even got mybrother's duster alignment done here.

Thanks for posting. This is so interesting. This post has taken me back to my engineering college days where it was mandatory for us to work in a local garage for few months. So I did. and suddenly I remembered that I have seen such old machine somewhere.
The old methods are definitely good but needs a lot of skill.

SRL WHEEL ALIGNMENT CENTRE, Near Eagle Ridge Resort, Begur-Koppa Road - another manual wheel alignment center near Electronic City Phase 1. I got to know about this place from another modern workshop, run by ex-Toyota mechanics. Location map- https://goo.gl/maps/eFrYutGXUCpVoQ7DA

My poll choices

Before reading the thread: NEVER.

After reading the first post and the rest of the thread: DEFINITELY.

Next day itself visited Perfect Wheel Alignment (near JP Nagar Metro Station) travelling almost 1 hr in peak hour BLR traffic. The mechanic took a small test drive and told that there is a problem. Well, I knew it because even after getting the computerised alignment done twice recently, the car was still pulling itself to the left. I also knew that it could be a camber / caster issue.

30 seconds on the mechanical machine, the mechanic confirmed that it is indeed the camber issue. However, they checked the front wheel control arms and told that this also needs replacement along with the shock absorbers. My car has run 1.2L kms and was still on original suspension and I was looking to get that changed in the upcoming service next week after my short run to Tirupati over the weekend.

Finally, we agreed that I should first get the service done and the above parts replaced and then come back for the camber alignment.

Very happy with the treatment and the assurance that it will be resolved.

In the era of the computerized devices, the men with this skill are an exception.

Nobody on this earth could manage to make my Polo go straight on the highways, there was always this left pulling issue when someone suggested me to visit a guy in Gurgaon, I promptly did the same and the man simply solved my problem. The man has computerized setup, but has a lot of experience in manual adjustment too.

Made adjustments, drove, then returned back, made adjustment again. Then I left, I returned back after 5 minutes that the problem is still there, he made adjustments, drove, returned back and that was the last time my car had wheel alignment done - more than 50k kms already done post that and I don't want anyone to touch the car again. After that I have sent there Innova, XUV, Ecosport and a few cars of friends too, the result has always been 10/10.

The problem with computerized centres is that the staff is simply under skilled to get the job done if there is a single outlier.

Naumaan, at Deluxe wheel alignment did the magic.
I have a left pull issue on my Hexa and still not able to resolve. Anyway TASS is out of picture for Alignment issues.

Tried in 2 places and they dont bother to ask about FWD or RWD

Will try in this Deluxe wheel alignment, as I stay near Bhatrahalli and see if it resolves.

Thanks for the pointer.

Re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

Any leads for an experienced manual alignment technician/shop in Pune? After I I got a complete overhaul of my Fiesta’s suspension, with new tyres and alloy wheels, I have got the alignment done 4 times. The computerised machine has its preset parameters, but since I have upsized tire width, there is a slight pull to the left always. I want an experienced technician to sort it out manually.

Re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

Since my regular alignment guy is away for sometime, I tried another shop called A A alignment in Singhasandra. Regret going there. He even said that alignment should be checked only at speeds, and not when driving slow. This after supposed to have his shop for 7 years at that place.

Re: Manual Wheel Aligner Vs 3D/Computerized/Laser Wheel Alignment

My GV had steering wobble/shake at 100+ speeds. Took it to perfect wheel alignment shop near JP nagar metro station. Being saturday, it was a little busy. Still managed to get things done in less than an hour.

Since its sheering wobble, mech said wheel balancing has to be redone. While doing so, they found a air valve neck which was left inside the tyre while fitting new tyres. They showed it to me and removed it. All the four tyres were balanced. Post that alignment for both front and back tyres were made. Since GV has independent multilink suspension, it warrants alignement of rear wheels aswell. They used thread meathod to make sure front and rear tyres are in alignment. He checked the suspension condition on my request. Apart from front tie rod ends which had little play, rest all was in good shape.

Went for a test ride after that. I said the rear suspension is unsettling and hard on going over speed breakers. He said that the rear tyres are old and hand causing this behavior. One tyre is 2017 make and other is 2014 make. Will get both changed to MRF wandarer AT and see if that solves the issue. Total cost 1100/-

There was a new JK registered Toyota LC aswell getting alignment done when I was there.

Adding few pics.

Cheers,
HTC
