I don't think there should be any scrapping issues with the 5J. However its pretty easy, once you have decided on the alloys and tires shod a pair on the rear and have 3 people sit in the rear seat car. Check if there is enough clearance between the wheel arch and the tire. If yes you are good to go .

Bridgestone potenza is what I have in mind. Any other tyre recommendations?

Thanks again.

The tyre guys says its only available in 12'. I need 13' tyres. The car in question is the normal alto not k10. Or should I stick with 12' itself?

Well, safe is 12. Like from posted here, with 4/5 on board & luggage, tyres can scrap. You can fix the issue though to some extent.

13 will look better.

Well,13" should not be an issue. That was the size on the export version of the Alto before the advent of K10. May be it will require a spacer and also lead to a slight speedo error. Check the ownership thread of Akroy, I think he fitted 13" alloys.

Go for 165/60R12 (Yoko A539) OR 155/70R12 (Michelin XM1+) & you will not have any issues.

Go for 155/60R13 & tyres are prone to scrape under load.

Michelin XM1+ offers very good comfort for a 12"er.

Nice wheels and tires beejay.

Could you please share the comfort level, feedback and cost factor?

Thanks, Jose.

Thanks Jose,

The steering feels more heavy, i like that and the cars more well placed on the road. Have bent the rear fenders inside, just in case it scrapes on full load. Which I will check soon and update.
The tyres cost me 3200 per wheel.

Wheels are 13x5.5J.

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

My Alto's stock MRF ZVTS have run 50k and are nearing end of their life. So I have started exploring options available in market.

Main criteria is long life, good driveability and price . I plan to stick to original tyre size of 145/80 R12. I got to know that Apollo Accelere are not available in this size. So apart from that I have following options (in order of preference):

1. Good Year Ducaro Himiler (Rs. 2400 per tyre) - The tread pattern looks good. Shopkeeper and Company site claim that it can last 1lac kms.
2. MRF ZVTS (Rs. 2350 per tyre) - Current stock tyres are of same type and they have served 50k kms as of now. No big issue apart from the fact that since last 3-4K kms ride has become hard. Shopkeeper says that tyres have become hard due to their age (in use since Dec 2007).
3. Apollo Amazer - ??
4. Bridgestone (Rs. 2900 per tyre) - Not sure about quality but price is on higher side.
5. Michelin - Heard that they don't last long on Indian roads. So last in my list.

Members, please provide your suggestions.

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hello Friends,
I have a Alto lxi 2008 model running on michelin xm1 145/80 R12 that is the stock size,i changed it as soon as i bought my car.Now my tyres have done 51000 kms still it can run 5000 kms .
Now my query is can i upsize it to 13 inch K10 Alto rim with 155/65 R13 michelin tyre.
Will the K10 rim fit Alto lxi?
What are the pros and cons of 13 inch size.I read it improves handling but compromises on ride comfort and mileage, even read since wall thickness is less than 145/80 more prone to damages.
will ground clearance increase compared to R 12 size
thanks a lot ,please guide me

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

You can go right upto 185/60 r13 on an Alto. No issues at all. Ride comfort and handling will be far better and you can navigate potholes without enduring any drastic shocks. The only hit, if one can call it that, you will have to endure is mileage, it will go down by 1 or 2 kms per lt. Also be careful with these tyres for the first 300 kms or so, if you opt for Yokohama/Michelin or Accelere. These are soft compound tyres and can get damaged initially if rashly driven.

The upsizes available in 13 " for the older alto's are
155/65-13
165/60-13
145/70-13

I used to run 165/60/R13 on my older alto.

Considering the fact that the K10 has 100 PCD rims they are a straight fit into the older alto's.

Pro's
  • Your car will look better with wider/bigger tires.
  • Handling will improve.
Con's
  • You will have to pay more for 13" tires.
  • Sidewall thickness will reduce and IMO you wouldn't feel much of a difference in the ride comfort.
  • With the 165 profile tires there are chances that the tires will touch the rear wheel arches in case of full load.
  • Your better half will start nagging about spending more.
That said 155/65-13 is your best bet for an upgrade in terms of tire size.

re: Maruti Suzuki Alto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi,

I have a 2003 Alto LX. It is running on stock tyres and the odo is at 37K kms. It has endured a lot of bad roads and thus one tyre gave up completely.

Now I am planning to get a set of 5 tyres. I do not want an upgrade, i.e. stick to 145 / 80 R12.

Please suggest me brand options and their approximate prices for a set of 5.

Thanks in advance for your prompt response.
