Michellin xm2 will be a bit more comfier than alnac. But at its price, you are still getting a low end Michellin

If comfort is paramount, look no further than 195/60 Micgellin P3 ST

If it is ultimate performance you are after, then check out 195/55 R 15 Hankook Ventus v12 evo

I have upsized to 195/60 Michelin ST3 but found the ride hard and bumpy. I maintain 32 psi front and 29 psi rear as recommended. However this recommendation is for stock tyre 185/60. A thought just occurred to me: should the tyre pressure be reduced as the tyre size increases? Bicycle tyres has small cross sectional area but the air pressure to be maintained is huge.

On Android version I thought I saw a response to my post above.

I got my own tyre inflator with gauge and found out that the pressure was 34 psi (filled by a roadside tyre wala). I brought it down to 30 front and 29 rear. Now it is much more comfortable.

I had upsized to 205/55 Conti MC5 and kept 30 psi in all wheels. The ride was very bumpy and felt vibrations on the break pedal. This was more on highway drives. I reduced the pressure to 28 psi in all wheels and felt a huge difference immediately. The ride has become very smooth and the break pedal vibrations have come down drastically.

After much deliberation - and painstakingly long conversations with myself in my head - I finally settled for 195/60 R15 Yokohama S-Drives.

I would have preferred the 205 ones - but felt like I could use the extra ground clearance and added comfort. The only thing is - it feels a bit more wobbly when at 33 psi for all tyres, which is what I always kept my stock tyres at.

I tried going with 32 psi for all as well - and found it to be slightly better.

Since I have never upsized my tyres before- I'm wondering how low I can go without it being dangerous and/or wrong? I usually have at least 3-4 adults in my car with added luggage about once a week.

So any help would be appreciated.

P.S. - Contrary to what I expected, the road noise has reduced significantly when compared to the stock Goodyear tyres I had replaced them with from the service centre, and this is despite the S Drives being super grippy "sporty" tyres.

Hi ahmadnaik, you can refer to tyre upsize calculator from any website to see the difference in % of the wheel diameter and it's good if you maintain it within 3% or to be extra safe 2%. The 205/55 would've given the same ride quality and least % of difference.
The Yoko S drives ride silently for first half of their life and and thereafter tend to get noisy.
If comfort had been your preference, you could've gone for a brand other than S drive as they are hard compound grip oriented tyres and supposedly less on comfort.

As per my understanding,

Stock tyre is 185/60/R15 and will have a Section Height of 111 mm (185 X 60/100).

195/60/R15 will be having a section height of 117 mm (195 X 60/100) - 6 mm increase in ground clearance. [117 - 111] mm

205/55R15 will have a Section Height of 112.75 mm (205 X 55/100) - 1.75 mm increase in ground clearance. [112.75 - 111] mm

We can forget about the alloy for the time being as the size of it doesn't change and has no impact in ground clearance in this context. The only thing that changes is the Section Height and the same is explained above.

Please correct me if the figures provided above are wrong. Also, please explain how you got the figures 301.5 mm, 307.5mm and 303.25mm.

It's just two ways of looking at one subject. Please note that the figures I gave are RADIUS of the complete wheel (alloy + rubber tyre) whereas you had put aside the alloy size as a constant and did not consider in your calculation.

If you add size of alloy wheel to your calculation you will arrive at same figure as mine. In tyre size nomenclature R15 means the (alloy) wheel diameter is 15 inches. In mm this is 15x25.4 = 381mm. Radius = 381/2 = 190.5mm. From your calculation section height is 111mm. Add 190.5 and 111 will give overall wheel radius = 301.5mm.

Hello everyone!
Its finally time to change the stock tyres on my 2012 Vento Tdi Highline (stock size - 185/60 R 15).
Although they have enough tread left to last another 5-10K kms, the tyres have hardened up considerably and the road noise has increased drastically.
Went through the major part of this thread and learnt abt the popular tyre choices and sizes and am left a lil confused. Really need some inputs to help me make a decision.
I am not a very enthusiastic driver and I use the car 90% in city with a few weekend drives on highways and limit my speeds to abt 120kms max.
My requirements are (in order)
1) Comfort & low noise
2) Good dry and wet grip
3) Durability.

Having recently changed my Innova stock Bridgestone tyres to Yoko Earth 1s, I am very impressed by them Yokos and have more or less decided to go for them for my Vento unless anyone can suggest something else.

I am wanting to upsize to 195/60 but am concerned if the larger width and higher unsprung weight of the tyre would wear the suspension and steering components faster. Specially since i drive in the city and parking my car mostly requires a lot of manouverung and lock to lock steering.

Would like your feedback/suggestion on whether to upsize to 195/60 or not and anyother tryes that i can consider.

I think its safe to upsize to 195's since many folks have done the same and none of them complained about it. As a matter of fact i have been running 205/55/R15 S-drive on my vento since Mar 2011 and covered 70K distance (First set changed at 45K and other set of S-drive has completed 25K). Still my suspensions are working fine and no steering issue as well. Only thing i got changed after 6 years in suspension system is bushes, link rods etc which are standard replacement after this much duration.

If comfort is your priority than do not go beyond 195. In fact i am also planning to change to 195's for my third change.

So - I finally realised that the 195/60 R15's were a bad idea. In fact - scratch that, a terrible idea. Obviously this is personal preference - but one thing I've learnt from my rather expensive mistake is this - even a 12mm increase in diameter is enough to drastically change the driving dynamics of your vehicle. And I repeat - it was drastic indeed.

I decided to go for the 195's since my car used to bottom on some of the mountain peaks the authorities in Mumbai call "speed breakers", and I thought a slight increase would be welcome, and not affect the driving dynamics noticeably. And I was wrong.

So - I've switched to 205/55 R15 Yokohama S-Drives, barely 2 months after I had switched to the 195's - and the difference is immediately, without doubt, noticeable. Acceleration and Braking is both increased - and by my estimate, the traction control engages way lesser than before.

So - in conclusion, without further ado - I hereby pass my experienced, albeit a bit premature, judgement -

If you want to upgrade your Vento tyres, and care about better grip and handling - go for the 205/ 55 blindly.

Seriously - just literally walk up to the guy with a blindfold and tell the tyre change dude I want the 205's. Period.

I got my tyres changed from Pal Tyres at Laminton Road in Mumbai. There's a gentleman there by the name of Mr Gagandeep who's really helpful and has a ready stock of Yokos.

That is very contrasting to my experience. Two sets of Yokohama C-drives have been phenomenal in 195/60 R15 in my car. Traction levels, braking distance, et. al. has been great. I felt improvement in driving dynamics too.

What tires were your 195/60 R15s and what was the tyre pressure?

On a side note, my car is 2010 manufactured and has Euro-spec heavy duty suspension. This difference plays a huge role too.
