My Yamaha RD 350 ( 1986 make )

My Yamaha RD 350 ( 1986 make )
It's 1986 RD 350. Everything appears to be stock except the turn lights which are from Enfield. Rear-view mirrors are amiss. Still runs on CB points. Bought 4 months back. Starts in 2nd kick max. Acceleration is dizzying. Haven't got guts to see its limits. Sound is orgasmic. And too loud. People run for cover and traffic parts when approached from behind because they haven't heard this sound before as it is quite unlike anything available on Indian roads. Can RD gurus please tell from the pix if it is an HT or an LT? Didn't find any lettering on the block.

inner_roadster Many motorcycles have come and gone, but this particular Yamaha RD350 motorcycle remains a constant. It is simply the favorite motorcycle in garage.

The famous rumour that "Yamaha RD350 was banned in India" was not entirely true. It was regarded fairly powerful and fast for its time, so much so, that rumour has it this bike was being commonly used in thefts and robberies.

nomadabhi Nice ride man. I share the same. I adore and respect it even after 10 years of ownership.
About your concerns of it being HT/LT? Here it is;

1. Model is 1986 which means an LT. Escorts started introducing these bike with a plate on block's exhaust port in 1985. Later, from 1986 onwards, Escorts started building the blocks locally with small exhaust ports referring to LT.
2. The "YAM 6.JPG" itself says it all. The "made in India" embossed on clutch cover shows it being LT.
3. The end part of Exhaust pipes are slightly bend like those of Rajdoot XLT (but less as compared) which is a mark of LT. In HT, the end starts bending at terminals.

As most of people ride RD within city limits, LT is a good option considering city traffice, fuel consumption, low gears and engine heat up. On one of my trips, I managed to churn out 31kmpl. All in all, I would say a

pgsagar Thank you everyone for those good words. I have been away for a while and hence this delay in thanking everyone. However, the sad part is, I have sold this bike. I have moved on to a 4-cylinder bike-- a Honda CBX 750 F inline-4 of 1989/90 make. Will post the pics soon. It's in equally pristine condition. However, I wish I could keep RD, too. But tight budget meant it had to go to make way for the 4-cyl. However, as soon as my finances improve, I will pick another RD. But looking at the condition most RDs in India are reduced to, I doubt if I will find an as-good one. 31st March 2009
speed0mania pgsagar! nice ride buddy! looks well kept!
thats an HT cylinder ! it says 347 and not rajdoot 347! silencers look to be LT but thats not what really matters, you will have to check if the inner muffler pipe is that of an HT or not as due to non availability lots of HTs are running on a similar setup!

turbo_v12 Another possible (but not totally reliable) method of checking whether the bike is a HT or LT is by checking the left side crank-case cover. If it says "MADE IN INDIA" it is an LT (unless of course, the cover has not been tampered with).

Also, an LT will not rev past 7k rpm (you will feel power is being wasted), but an HT goes beyond the 9k mark still developing power. As Ajay said, the silencers indicate that the bike is an LT.

turbo_v12 Awesome bike. Have you posted a thread about it? Sorry I do not visit T-BHP that much now a days. You could also think about RX-100 indicators. The RE tail light is a good thing since it has better reflectors than the original RD ones.

Keep her that way...

Jayabusa All I can say is awesome ride and very well maintained. Keep up the good work brother. 20th October 2008
Ajaybiz The exhaust pipe says it LT and after 1986 only LT's are produced and limited versions of HT for Police.Nice bike mate, get original blinkers(eBay US) and paint the from fork pipe to stock color.
Also if you want to invest some more on this beauti buy RDD CDI for her.

Monster_BHP This RD looks exactly like the RD i had in Bangalore!! I have been owneing RDs since i was 14yrs old and thanks to that i have a right knee problem due to kick starting them.

Anyways the silencer are of Low Torque but we cant say till you remove the exhaust or open the head.
