Deccan Heritage vintage show, 15th August 2011

(Note: There are a couple of threads on the 15th Aug. shows pertaining to this club, but as the individual years have been mentioned, I thought of starting a new thread for this year's show.)

The Deccan Heritage Automobile Association held the I-day vintage/classic show at Lumbini Park yesterday and I had the pleasure of driving down and participating in my '64 Herald 'CAN' on India's 64th I-day!

Incidentally, this was also the very first time that I drove my Herald all alone through the city traffic (albeit from Secunderabad and back) and I must say it did perform quite well, except that the brakes needed double-braking because of the front wheel cylinders beginning to give up and there were a few occasions en route where the car had stalled in idling at traffic signals () but luckily started up again!

The starting time was given as 10am but I was late by nearly 2 hours because I was able to wash/polish the car only yesterday morning as it was still being worked on until Sunday evening! Despite which there were still a couple of things pending on it (which are being completed now!)
For this reason, I thought it better to leave it at the garage itself from where I would collect it and drive down.

But make it I did and needless to say I had a really good time! A couple of first-timers had shown up this time, namely a nice, original Maicoletta brought down by a friend from Bangalore (for getting it done up here), a few from the collection of Mr. Mushtaq Hussein (which had been featured in another thread earlier) and- glad to note- another STANHER that gave me company!

Let the pics. do the rest of the talking! I'm dividing them into two posts as there are too many for one post.
This one's of the cars....starting with the first car I photo'd! Incidentally, this Herald did appear familiar to me, looking at the number. I first mistook it to be one that I used to see with a local dealer. But much later yesterday, I remembered where I'd seen it, or rather a pic. of it:

Hey Shyam!

Thanks for the pictures! I could not make it to the meet as I had to leave for Nagpur on urgent personal work over the weekend. The two tone Herald looks great! What about the pictures of your Herald?

Glad to see the ADX 7595 (our Ex-Elegant) after a long time!

Do post more pictures of the meet if possible.

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

As for my Herald, your wish is my command!

Here's the next batch of pics. starting with 'CAN' in all her full gleam and glory (and the participation certification given by the club)...as for the last show, I'd specially fitted LUCAS MADE IN ENGLAND tail-lamp covers on, promptly taken off and replaced with the local ones after the show:

Nice snaps Shyam. The Herald looks beautiful. Hope you get the brake issue resolved ASAP. Had a scary incident with my 1968 one.

Hi Ameet,
Yes, I intend to get a new set from the UK, there are a few that come up for sale on ebay. Your 1968- you mean the white MYQ mk2 that was lying at Khoday's when you picked it up? Nice car that was! 'wonder where it disappeared (with your Gazel) after you left! Which reminds me- yesterday, as I was heading for the rally, I stopped by a meter repair shop (where, incidentally, I'd got my car's speedo repaired) at Tank Bund, to refill fuel, and the car drew quite a lot of attention from the onlookers, one of whom who looked like a mechanic. He told he too had a Herald and a Gazel once, both of which simply sat rotting for ages and were eventually sold (for scrap no doubt)

Sorry Sonu, no interior pics. taken here as I'd kept CAN locked up all the while until I left, as I was going around the place and some of the public (esp. kids) at this venue tend to open unlocked doors, get into the cars to have their pics. taken, fiddle with the controls etc.! There was one kid whom I had to shout at because she was moving one of CAN's wipers up and down! Luckily I was going to leave then and came there. Ironically her parents were standing by and even retorted something like "what's the problem?!"

I did upload interior pics. in the CAN thread though.

No other pics. of 8133 either I'm afraid!

Anyways, here are the rest of the pics. with the last of the cars followed by those of the scooters:

A first-timer was this Falcon scooter- a rare sight in Hyd. I remember seeing just one, a green one in a shabby state owned by a shokeeper many years ago (late '90s)
'not sure if any of them came with this mudguard though- I've seen only Allwyn Pushpaks fitted with them.

Re: Deccan Heritage vintage show, 15th August 2011

01) Dodge-my marks to her 10/10.
02) Lamby (MDS 4713)-Memories Galore. My Nanu had that one but my three Mama's let her die due to internal fued. Seeing this, How I wish I could have saved her.
03) Maicoletta-So unique.
04) Vaspa (APY 5141)-Nice shades, may not be liked by everyone.
05) Vaspa (ADY 9751)-Nice color. Wow that windshield.
06) Beige (APX 9384)-How does that headlight work?.
07) Army green (APF 232)-Why such neglect, What's the purpose of that box on fuel tank?
08) Norton (APF 1953)/Triumph (APF 4983)-I wanna STEAL these bikes.
09) Triumph-The Bathtub (MRC 919)-I like that design too. Fun to take those SAREE clad carefree, pallu flying babes on this one.
10) BSA(BIKE) That unique headlight looks more expensive than the bike itself. Wish you had close up of that.

APF 232 BSA actually has what is called the 'patina' look- quite the opposite of the shiny, restored look. It evokes different responses from different people. Personally I like it. My LD too had it (same colour too! ))

I think the box on the tank is for the air-filter. Here is another 'wartime' bike with what looks like a similar one (the ID plate on it isnt the original one- just a replica)

Deccan Heritage vintage show, 15th August 2011-img_6323.jpg

Deccan Heritage vintage show, 15th August 2011-img_6324.jpg

Yes, the APF bikes are awesome too. Incidentally, I also have a soft-corner for any APF regn. since my CAN originally had one too!

And yes, the Bathtub would be fun to ride with 'those SAREE clad carefree, pallu flying babes'- but unfortunately even they are as hard to find in that garb as these vehicles in this 'zamaana'!

Its surprising that no other TBHPian was at this show.

One low light was recently on sale on OLX or QUIKR. Cannot recall where exactly but it was.

Sagar Bhai : The Elegant had the original black colour when we got it. When we got the car, the flooring was completely damaged due to rust. So after the repairs of the flooring, the car was completely repainted. That is the paint you see on the car now.

Neglect? I feel this was one of the best bikes of the lot. Got a period look. Although it has been repainted, it sure is at least a few decades old. I would "rust"ore it and leave it as it is. Almost all the parts are intact on this M20, and that is a rare sight. Yes, the box on the tank is a Vokes air filter.

Here is a good site showing the internal diagram of this filter. Replicas are made in Delhi.

BSA m20 The vintage british motorcycle - Original parts
