Yes thats a goof-up. American Presidents using Rolls Royces??They are at home with Cadillacs and Lincolns and we have seen many pictures of the Eisenhower and Kennedy visits.
Not sure if they changed cars en route and were not clicked by the paparazzi ??
Then again Lal Bahadur Shastriji using a Rolls Royce? He owned a 1961 Fiat 1100, the only car he possessed during his whole lifetime. This was bought for Rs 11,000 and was his personal car.
He was a man known for his simplicity - I cannot at all believe that he used an official Rolls Royce- never!
Back to the main topic, wish all teambhpians a gala time with the ensuing run!

Is there a route map for the rally? Incase we need to be bystanders on the road watching the few that drive upto chembur?

Will be leaving in a few minutes for the rally. Is there any TBHP meet planned at the venue?

Re: VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta Mumbai - 4th March 2012

Ok, I was there. I pulled out my point and shoot. Then I looked around. Everyone had huge DSLR's with every conceivable type of lens. Long zoom, zoom, tele, prime etc etc

I put my P&S back in and proceeded to feast on the cars

Wow!!

Here are a few. I am sure the professionals will post the fab photos taken from the fab DSLR's later today

There were many cars that were really nice. The rare Lanchester, the Rollers, Hudson's etc. But the Merc in the last pic really made my day: Splendid

Awaiting the pics and possibly a little bit of history on the cars from the experts here.

I missed the Lanchester.

The cars which drew my attention were a 6 litre light blue & black Bentley ( possibly built after RR took over Bentley), a couple of Packards, a Traction Avant, a very well maintained Alfa 1300 (single owner), a Lancia sports, a deep brown Dodge Kingsway(I may be wrong), two Fiat 500s, an Austin Seven apart from the usual suspects - lots of Mercs, a few RRs and a fleet of large American cars of the 50s.

Was a great day.

Regards

Re: VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta Mumbai - 4th March 2012

Just read in this mornings Indian Express that the mercedez nurburg was awarded the concours in the vintage category at yesterdays rally. This car is really a well restored beauty. However I think the paper has made a mistake in its caption where it is said that the Mountbatten Rolls also won the concours. The reason? because the said rolls was restored by the days judge and the owners son when asked why this car was not brought for judging correctly said that he did not bring the car to be judged since the same gentleman had restored the car . Therefore either the paper is wrong or the car was judged in absentia. All credit to the restorer/judge for bringing this rolls to this level in a short period of 4 months, but really the car requires some more TLC to come to a concours level. The morning was a fun gathering of friends , many who meet just once a year, and it was nice to see the young VCCCI secretary organizing the show. Lovely cars , great people and lots of fun. Nice to have such mornings, but next event when its a bit cooler please. I dont have the list of prize winners , but hope the Hudson won a prize for amazing ressurection.

Don't be intimidated by how Big their lens are, "It's quality not quantity" that counts. Your shots were great & for the moment i too would pick the Mercedes.

Looking forward to seeing more photos and information about the event.

Re: VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta Mumbai - 4th March 2012

Got these pics from a friend of mine who attended the rally, they are not DSLR quality but will do for the time being. 50s Merc type 300 and Alfas are the pick of the lot for me.

Kevinephraim, I dont know if it was deliberate, but your black and white picture is so elegant with its background. B&W snaps have a certain charm that somehow I feel is lost in colour. Specially on such occassions. Observe carefully and one cannot be faulted in thinking this to be a picture taken in the late fifties or early sixties. Thanks for a lovely snap.

Re: VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta Mumbai - 4th March 2012

Had a blast yesterday, but the run up to the event began with the judging. I attended in the evening and after a long time because I wanted to meet Mr. Ghosh personally. My car was not fit to be judged for a prize and efforts towards that are anyway not worth it. More of that later.

The place of judging was quite crowded, lots of people taking lots of photos, unfortunately crowd control was not in place and general public sat in and on cars. One could not leave their cars unattended. But there is lots of enthusiasm. We allowed a reporter of a TV channel to sit in my car and give his bites.

When entering the venue for judging we made a huge error and parked next to the Hudson. That blunder was corrected as within 10 minutes we were asked to park on the side, and we obliged. Once in a while the bearded man would be near his Hudson and speak into cameras about its uniqueness and its hunting abilities. Remember, this car came from Bandra, what did they hunt there? The bird sanctuary is in Sewree. And that hunting light was never on the car when it moved around Bandra, I had myself seen her outside Sea Rock in the 1980's.

Present were a number of enthusiasts and the place became like a meet which we should have more often. I noticed that hardly anyone sat under the umbrella, we were more in groups around the cars. Tea and water were either not provided or were rationed.

Now to the judging. The judging was actually quite meaningless. Mr. Ghosh came all the way from Kolkata, he was sincere in his efforts and did not judge the Rolls which he had restored. As per my memory a similar thing happened last year also when he did not judge a Buick which he had also restored.
A pity is that judging is not transparent and those who actually expect results will always be disappointed. The details of the judging have to be announced in advance. I was surprised to see Mr. Ashar judging bikes, and perhaps he was surprised to find an 'assistant' around him. Judging was to be done on the third, there were requests to judge bikes on the 4th also which was refused. And suddenly we had a surprise visitor in the morning and he quickly within a few minutes judged a Rolls in the mela and gave it a prize. What efficiency and what an honour to get a car specially judged. And that proves my point that the judging was meaningless. Hopefully someone will put up who won which prize.
Here a few pictures of Mr. Ghosh, my car & me and a detail shot of the Merc.

Cheers harit

VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta Mumbai - 4th March 2012

At the outset - I have a lot of pictures to load, so forgive my tardiness.

The event was genuinely very enjoyable with the weather gods on our side, summers nonwithstanding. The turnout was surprisingly high, with a sprinkling of new entries as well. We flagged off from Horniman circle (amidst a very large crowd - photography was very difficult). The event ended at 'The Acres Club' at Chembur, which was a great setting for lunch and the prize distribution. Ample parking, though in the hot sun. As always, enjoyed meeting old friends and new.

I had hoped to have my Landmaster ready for the event but little free time from work meant she will wait her turn. I jumped in with Rony in his immaculate 1964 Fiat 1100 (who also went on to win the prize for Best Maintained in the Indian Heritage category). We were lucky to have our dear friend Gogi (V-16) to join us for the drive. Next year he is entering 5 cars

Here are some of the pictures, in alphabetical order.

This red Alfa was a new entry (for me at least)

Giving her company was this immaculate silver example. I'm afraid I have no further details on both cars.

As part of the Indian Heritage class there were these 2 Ambys entered - unfortunately both cars were completely modernised.

As with most events, Austins were aplenty

This red Seven apparently has made an appearance after many years.

Buicks were represented by this pair of convertibles and a pair of saloons

The pair of similar Cadillacs included Amal's Series 62 convertible that took top honours at the last Cartier event. His dedication is commendable - the result seen in all 3 cars he entered (of which 2 won prizes).

More commonly seen is its hardtop cousin.
