Many cars have come in via this route, some have declared correct prices, some I am told by people in authority with incorrect prices.

I am also given to understand that the DRI is currently collecting information on all imports and may discuss with the importers at some point in future.

The latin term Caveat Emptor in a sense applies to all buyers.

An Indian collector has recently bought 10 similar condition cars, mostly french and will be restoring them here.

Once done they will be eye catchers in any show.

Tweety says they will make their first public appearance in the 21 gun salute show 2016

Earlier we had seen that unrestored cars were imported and also CKD, now two more unrestored Cadillac's have landed in the country, interestingly they are mentioned as " Gifted ", both cars appear to be for the same collection and Delhi seems to be the destination.




Now some one please shed light on how to get vintage cars as gift and how does it work when you import a Gift ( No duty ?)

Even gifts are charged the same percentage of duty as is applicable for cars purchased. There is no concessional duty on gifts .

Sorry if am being naive, but shouldn't they have made the law something like cars that are older than 25 or 30 years old are classics and can be imported than this pre-1950 rule.

Know that this rule itself is a small victory, but for me most of the classic cars are between 1950 and 1980, and i don't think that people will import a 25 year old car for daily drive or for commercial purpose, which is the 'rational' fear that the government has for banning import, citing dumping.

Instead of the 1950 rule, they should come up with an age based system,

You can import a pre 1950 car under the transfer of residence scheme. However certain conditions like RHD steering and controls, Speedometer in KMPH etc. will have to be met.

Custom is charged on Gift value but buyer does not necessarily need to show funds to acquire besides Gift value can be mentioned as convenience and may not be a correct value - of-course there can be some audits later on

Customs are not basing their valuation and appraisal on declared purchase value or value of the gift as declared by the beneficiary or the person gifting. They are following the Hemmings Price Guide along with certified valuation by Chartered Engineers who give their independent assessment of the value based on the marque, type, model , condition of the car and other parameters.

As of now it is any car manufactured on or before 1st Jan 1950. What have you heard?
