Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

Most of the list of cars imported seemingly are LHD, if so how is this possible when another gentleman stated on previous page they cannot be LHD or must be RHD to be eligible for import. Confused can someone clarify

I am given to understand that the import of pre-1950 cars under the dgft notification does not restrict LHD cars from being imported.

However it is applicable for cars post 1950 (maybe excluding TR)

its all a bit confusing , though .

So these LHD cars can be registered and used on our roads? or they will be just display purposes?

They are being registered in a couple of states , but the dgft notification says that they are for use in vintage rallies and shows.

Well things are certainly not what they used to be, climate is changing at a pace that is surprising many, so "who checks today" can very well become "well this turned out to be sour grapes", grapes being cheaper to let turn sour!!

So the bottom line or strictly speaking is cars permitted to be imported from before 1950 are not permitted to be driven on regular roads period(.) ? Thanks for your input.

Nowhere in the notification does is state that they can not ply on public roads, infact it states that the cars that would be plying on public roads will continue to be subject to Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Rules, 1989.”

“(III) Cars manufactured prior to 1st January, 1950 are free for import by Actual
Users. Policy Condition (I) and (II) above shall not be applicable for these cars. Policy Conditions 1 & 2 mentions the LHD factor.

Can I request you to post a link of the above, still confused if LHD is permitted

Disclaimer: My Grapes analogy and comparison is basis and in response to something shared earlier which was withdrawn or edited. I am unable to edit after 30 minutes. Therefore the counter stated remains

There is no restriction whatsoever around importing of LHD as a matter of fact 90% of the vehicles imported under this category have been LHD's. Trust this helps to solve your quandary.

A washington based vintage enthusiast wishes to import a pre-1950 LHD from US. Information on the process, procedure and pricing involved will be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Nevertheless, the government duty has been charged on the basis of what is the norm and the math. It is what is to be believed and accepted by the us as reality.

Was cleared under a 30%HS Customs Code. Usually seen only on spare parts and CKD cars imported by large manufacturers.
