What's with the post-1950 imports these days?

First a '63 Lincoln Continental

And now a '71 Jaguar E-Type!

Here's a photo of the E-Type

Could be a transfer of residence case, following the appropriate import rules.

To the best of my knowledge, LHD cars are not allowed on TR.

Tweety says the E-Type belongs to the head of a prominent business house with automotive interests. Car makers have certain concessions when it comes to imports for RnD, so I assume the car came via that route.

The Lincoln and the E Type have been imported by the Tata's. As the E Type is RHD its has been allowed . While I was told the Lincoln has been gifted across to them . Sorry more details I do not have

Cheers

Out of curiosity- do these 'values' include the total value on landing, inc. Customs assessment, or just the cost of purchase of the car in INR?

This is the value of the customs assessment of the cost of car plus all costs upon landing , on which the customs duties would be levied !

Here's another addition to the list. Although it says 'Incomplete car - without body parts, seats, windscreen.'

Edit: Mods please delete this post. I was on a different page and thought it was the last post on this thread. Apologies.

These prices are CIF Prices (Cost, Insurance & Freight). The custom duty is calculated based on that. So if the shipping of a part / stuff is high (in case when we order items in single qty air shipment). We end up paying duty on shipping as well.

Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

Does this mean if I find say a 1949 Chevy pick truck in the USA I can import it without any hassle? Or a old defender from UK?

Also does a US citizen living in India have any advantage for this exercise? Just curious.

Yes it does mean that you can import it without hassle, but you do have to pay 28% import duty on the C & F price (cost plus freight value) You would also have to show an official wire transfer of the funds from an Indian bank.

A US citizen can import a vehicle for personal use under TR or under ATA Carnet but I don't think it applies in the case of the Vintage vehicles as I am sure you will not be able to register the Vintage vehicles in India and that they will run under a Novelty/Show/Collection/Heritage number plate and in those particular events.

Is the duty really 28%. I was under assumption it's 200%. Can you reconfirm what you said and have you imported any vintage cars.

Sorry your information is incorrect. Duty is well in excess of 200%...218% on CIF to be more precise and there is no status given to a US citizen residing in India.

One can very much register the vehicle under Indian Motor Vehicle Act.

Hope this helps.
