Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

When I wrote my comments about the new import policy and the rules, it was always understood that the info was "to the best of my knowledge", and was based on stuff read, hearsay and other's experience.
I never thought that this policy/rules would be like a living organism, and grow into different directions as time passed and more cars came in.
So when I thought that valuation for customs duty purpose is based on original sale price, it turns out not to be the case. Many factors play a role, your invoice value, condition in terms of cost to get it to its current condition, whims and fancies of the concerned person to levy duty.
I thought JNPT was the sole place for import, but vehicles have gone to other places for clearance.
I don't know if one can still not resell, time will tell.
You can't register for road use, but is that really true? Time will tell, I am sure when the first registered vehicle is seen on the road we will definitely know.

Somewhere it said that the first vehicle to come in under the new policy was a blue Caddy, but we had seen a brown/maroon one before the blue one, now where did that go? Is it being restored?

I was told that any car coming in must have a title, one did not have this and was stuck in the port, hope it got out by now or went back. I was told that some countries even do not allow export of a car from their country without the title, so keep this in mind when buying a car abroad.

The only way to be absolutely sure of the procedures is to import a car, but I have presently no intention to do that. So have to rely on hearsay.

Still, its great to see new stock coming in.

Cheers and happy importing, harit

Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

So with the wide choices now available, here's an interesting car that would make a fine addition to any collection. Of particular significance since India has a Black Prince. I wonder what it would make.

Interesting to read that a 1960 S1 Bentley has also come in. Very pretty car, wonder how they bypassed the pre 1950 rule??

Very neat looking Bentley, but how was it registered?

The authorities in Bombay refuse to register cars that have come in under this notification stating that they can only be used as static displays

What a wonderful list to go through! Thanks for sharing avishar : ).

Could someone please tell me how the Import tax is calculated on these vintage vehicles?
I would like to know How much percentage tax is it exactly & If it's calculated on current value of the car or the price of the car when it was sold prior to 1950 please.

Thanks.

Tweety told me that the duty is on the present purchase price of vehicle,
the buyer/importer has to furnish proper invoice or if bought from ebay a screen shot of the bidding would also help, if the car is of the make already imported then the value of previously imported cars would be taken into consideration to determine the fair value, duty is also charged on the freight.

Duty comes to around 218 to 234 % , however there are no guarantees and the customs have the last say in value determination.

If you call the WIAA office in Mumbai, they will connect you to the concerned person who would give you the same info

In the import policy there is no restriction on the registration of the imported vehicle. Some states like Delhi do-not register the vehicle due to the emission norms. However, there are several states like Himachal , Uttrakhand, U.P. where the imported classic vehicles can be registered.

And that means then we can run them on the roads just like the in land cars that we run on the roads. If this can be done then there is good thing. Wish the year was relaxed to 1960 and then some classics can be bought at more reasonable rates then what available locally (due to scarcity).
