Correct, but the whole idea of badge engineering is to stagger pricing between two of the same models with a little cosmetic difference. Also sometimes some features differ, but essentially the same car.

Some facts about the Chrysler - PAL tie-up from the pages of Auto India. The brands viz. Dodge, Plymouth and Desoto shared the same assembly line at Kurla.
The Fiat- PAL collaboration saw its dawn when the sun was setting on the Chrysler tie-up.

Here is a real rarity - a log book of accounts of cars owned by a gent started in the 1930s. Courtesy the Bygone Bangalore facebook page.

Noteworthy - a 1931 Chevrolet AE 6 cylinder tourer list price was Rs. 2,845 brand new. Freight from Madras (being the port?) to Bangalore was Rs. 125. Further details including discounts etc are mentioned. Amongst the accessories, a pair of bumpers cost 80 rupees, a bulb horn cost 28 rupees, a grease gun just 5 rupees

New tyres and tubes in 1935 (car was 4 years old) cost Rs. 47. However by 1938 the cost of new tyres and tubes was up to 105 odd.

In 1939 the car was part exchanged for 800 ruoees with Addison for a new Dodge. The list price of the Dodge was Rs. 6,100 (without the heavy discount later mentioned). This time the bulb horn was free The car was sold for Rs. 3,000 in 1950.

The next car was a 1951 Hindustan 14, probably already showing the lesser options of cars available. The list price ex-Factory Calcutta was Rs. 9,975. An additional 50 rupees was paid for white side wall tyres.

Finally a note on petrol consumption. In 1939 the cost of a gallon of petrol was list as 1-5-6 (possibly the older Anna system? I'm afraid I cannot decode).

That log book is really worth a fortune today.

Here's how the 'Aana system' worked. The Rupee was made up of 16 aana and the aana was further made up of 16 pai (not paisa). The syntax used to be x-y-z, x being the Rupee, y the anna and z the pai. So, cost of one gallon of petrol was one rupee, 5 aana and 6 pai.

We have recently been discussing Addison & Co. in the dealership thread, and also the 1939 Dodge from the log book above. By sheer coincidence, from another source, here is a pricelist from them (also called Southern Motors?) dating to January 1939. Prices ex showroom, Madras.





The Plymouth commercial chassis (presumably you had to build your own utilitarian bodywork) started at just Rs. 3,150, while the top of the line Chrysler Royal 4 door sedan was listed at Rs. 7,450. The Dodge De-Luxe sedan is indeed listed at Rs. 6,100, just as mentioned in the log book.

A DE-DION in march 1910 cost Rs. 5500/- as per the correspondence between the The Upper India Motor Company, Lucknow and Babu Bahadur Sinha, Sultanpur.

Read in this fascinating correspondence how the car is to be sent from Bombay in 7 days and how the price is reduced from Rs.6500/ to Rs. 5550/-


and in further correspondence just 20 days later the car is stated to be sold to someone else.

Luckily the delivery notes are preserved (I'm sure the history file will have more such goodies). In 1929 a Model A Ford cost a princely Rs. 2,625.

I can't read the first extra (costing 30 rupees). The second is a luggage carrier costing 25 rupees. A petrol tin carrier cost Rs. 6, and a gallon of petrol was one rupee and eight annas
