| Distinguished - BHPian   | statesman pics To attend the Calcutta Statesman event has long been on my list, and this year luckily enough I got the opportunity. It was also my first visit to the charming city, and it was everything I was told it would be - crumbling colonial architecture and bright yellow Ambys everywhere! The event was rather different from those I am used to attending in Bombay - for starters its the venue. The Army's Eastern Command stadium in Fort William is an ideal setting, with ample space to accommodate the cars and visitors. Entry to the venue for visitors is via means of an invitation pass, surprisingly it isn't open for everyone (though I'm told its not difficult to procure one). The crowds on the streets throughout the event is proof enough that Kolkatans are still very excited by the event.    I was also lucky to participate, hopping into the enormous Ford Fairlane Galaxy of collector and restorer Shrivardhan Kanoria. The generous proportions and original interiors make it the most comfortable choice for the event  Piloting the Ford was veteran journalist, author and historian Gautam Sen - home turf for him. Incidentally in the past Gautam has been a judge at the event as well, and still judges at prestigious events across Europe. On the way back I took over the driving responsibilities, and was amazed at how light the controls were for such a large car in heavy traffic. Before the flag off the Army band (?) performed to delighted crowds, and we were off for a fairly comfortable route. On return we spent more time seeing the cars up close, and catching up with friends over lunch, (was great to catch up with mbz180) before the prize distribution ceremony. Chief judge was Raja Mookerjee, who also announced the prizes. Cars lining up for judging the previous day - a rigorous inspection involves three teams.   A fine performance    Here are some of the pictures I took, in order of flagoff. Disclaimer - model years and names have been taken from the entry list, supplied by owners themselves. Vintage Cars Entry no. 1 - 1906 Renault Freres, Late Shashi Kanoria This car was a particular treat, and just a handful of cars of this age in perfect working condition. The way she pottered about through peak traffic without skipping a beat was really a sight to behold. I was lucky to get a long drive as well. The car has been in the family for decades, and is a regular participant.  1912 Standard Coventry, Pramod Kumar Mittal.  1913 Stower, Late Santi Nath Chowdhury  1919 Citroen Torpedo, Naresh Chandra Agrawalla  1919 Crossley, Pramod Kumar Mittal  1922 Austin, Ajoy Basu  Some Austins were entered by Gautam Mukherjee, but probably did not participate, and it was announced that Mr. Mukherjee had sadly just passed away. He was apparently known as the king of Austin restorations. 1925 Austin Seven, Naresh Ojha  1925-1926 Rolls-Royce 20hp, Ashok Kumar Bubna This should be the Arnold bodied tourer GCK34. Sadly the sole Rolls at the event.  1926 Austin, Manish Jhunjhunwalla  1926 Austin, Nandini Chakravarthy (I hope I have matched the correct entries to the pictures, there were so many Austins!  1926 Lancia DiLambda, P. R. Agarwalla  1926 Packard, Late P.D. Chitlangia This car did not participate, though I was looking forward to seeing it. 1926 Studebaker Erskine, Kunal Kunal Banerjee This rare Erskine has been in the Banerjee family from new. It has been off road since the 1980s, and has just undergone a fine restoration. The owner is obviously taking keen interest, having travelled from the States (where he now stays) just to visit the event. The car retains its original owners manual, and happily enough a picture survives from when the car was new. Note the original 5 digit registration number.       1927 Dodge, Gaurav Duggar  1928 Ford, A Palchoudhuri  1929 Chevrolet Big Six, Rekha Kanoria  1929 Ford, Lt. Nonetheless it keeps spirits high, and brings in crowds.     Understandably, many owners are proud to display their trophies after the ceremony. In this case, the whole family comes up to receive the prize, including the child perched on the bonnet. Disclaimer - do not try this at home!      Another crowd puller was the Austin special towing the Rytecraft taxi. Pretty nifty!  Those who take the judging process seriously take great pains - even detailing the original jack in this Buick.  Original Ford stamped glass on the Fairlane  Couple of cool old(ish) stickers   Badge on the Renault  Rally participation badges on the Ford dated back to 1968 - the year of the first Statesman event I believe.  More badges   And finally, the Ford Model T that belongs to the Statesman itself - quite an icon.  Until next year then! |
