The older one (1979) with the three spoke steering wheel.

One CJ500D is quite old - a 1979 model that has a three spoke steering wheel. The others have the two spoke steering which are 1982 and later. These had the indicator stalks and dipper switch housed in a big plastic case and better accessible from the steering wheel. One has a dipper switch fitted on its dash to the right- a wacky job! Another change to be noticed here were the ventilator outlets just behind the front mudguard on either sides.
M&M committed a blunder while doing some cost cutting in 1982.The CJ 500 D's of 1982 and later for about two years, had a sealed windscreen as opposed to the age-old fold-able ones. These when used on dusty, country side roads, would coat the passengers with a full complement of dust as air circulation would stop and dust from the rear opening and sides would enter the cabin. On dusty roads, the front windscreen is normally raised up after the two windscreen adjusters are loosened first and thereafter tightened. The air current from the front checks dust entry from the rear and sides. As a corrective measure, M & M introduced those two ventilators located just behind the front mudguard. In practical use, these were of little help. Realising their folly, after two years they again introduced the old kind of windscreens. Never after 1984 has M&M attempted such a cost cutting measure to seal the windscreen.
I have been a victim of dusty coats in such jeeps many a time.Thank God, I don't have lung problems.
Most jeeps with sealed windscreens (1982-84) got a changeover to the older, open and close type windscreens at a cost.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

@anjan, incidentally, would it be feasible to get the hubcaps off the Amby??
If so, would definitely like to have them!

They still are in good condition with no rust. I wonder if they are stainless steel.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

This Bug FIAT is relatively neat and has got the original rims and engine as well, certainly deserves a better place rather this. Owner reluctance is letting this beauty to die a slow death, he has some nice collections to die slowly, quoting 2 lakhs for this Bug Fiat.

The other pictures, precious useful stuff used for a useless purpose.

Aah the Anandbagh Topolino again! I'd seen this car a couple of times, even posted pics. of it (and the FIAT hubcap stool!) earlier. Both a real shame!

And yes, you're right about the price. The guy, a mechanic, keeps buying (and selling) fiats; he usually has a cluster of padminis around his workshop!

Absolutely right! I have even offered a good deal for one of his 89 model PP's ATG XXXX but the guy seems to be very greedy and was reluctant to reduce even a 100/- Rs forget about doing the bargaining on the car, the condition of the car is poor, took out for a test drive it was literally shaking, petrol was pumped in through a 2 Lt water bottle, tyres cracked.

Though but wanted to convey the nature of this guy with whom a twin yezdi, Honda 124 (Imported) are rotting.

The gear lever as can be seen in the early 1980's CJ 500D's were thicker and more macho, to match with the gear box of the crude and torquey MD 2350 diesel borrowed from the International Tractor that Mahindra was making and fitting in the CJ 500D's.The older jeep here of 1979, with the three spoke steering wheel has the old design gear lever carried over from the petrol CJ3B and CJ4A that came with the Hurricane petrol engines. But this 1979 jeep too has a MD 2350 powerplant. In fact ,M&M introduced the CJ 500D sometime in 1975, but continued with the same gear lever till the early 1980's- may be 1981 it was, when they changed the lever.
CJ 500D was too uncomfortable for the front middle passenger, especially for long distances, as the leg room was very much reduced with the engine bay portruding into the passenger cabin. The rear seating 3+3 bench seats were also a curse for long distance travel. The CJ 4A had transverse back seat that could seat two passengers.Leg comfort was however minimal in the CJ3B and also CJ4A for the two rear seat passengers. But the later 3+3 configuration was still worse.
But its still a notch above the comfort the Gypsy's rear seated passengers get, who are tossed around as the MUV rocks 'n rolls while off-roading!

The white car is indeed a hindust(h)an 14, as ajay says. Both belong to the mechanic who lives in the house behind. And both have remained in the same state at the same spot since 2007! The Hindusthan seems to have had a modified front windscreen (one-piece) Atleast it looks restorable. 'wonder why they have been left that way!

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

This used to be a garage once upon a time due to road widening it's demolished, these cars are of customers cum the garage owners friends who brought them at a cheap price and then had the mood to restore but later kept it faded off and now the only remains are the poor cars. This garage owner Mr Hadi Ali is a regular participant of DHAA shows, he has a original Austin which was inherited from his grandfather and it seems was brought brand new from showroom then, he also has a B.S.A. M20 awesome condition, Mr Ali and his son Allu are known to me.

If you remember the Bug Fiat I have posted in the previous pages is now with the garage owner's son and he also has a very original un restored Ford for sale.

Yes the same. The rims incidentally are Herald ones. I like the way the rear wheels are fitted 'inside-out'- looks sporty and wicked! Although not recommended for actual running as the wheel alignment goes out, so do the wheel bearings.
