Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

1955/56 Plymouth Suburban, probably dieselised as front is tilted and there is an unusual knob beside the ignition switch, probably for the AC. (I maybe wrong though). A gentleman said the car was rejected due to poor petrol consumption, however he could not verify the engine.

Something big and heavy fell on the bonnet and got stuck. Could not open it and verify the engine. Overall in good shape. All door locks and boot lid lock are from HM Ambassador and speedo is missing.

The car is government registered and is available for sale through auction.

Wow, a suburban! I find these even cooler than the sedans. I think the rear hatch opens clamshell fashion. A similar car appears in one scene in the movie 'Chalti Ka Naam gaadi' in 1957.
Hope it indeed has the original engine intact. But even otherwise I think Plymouth petrol engines can still be sourced somewhere in the country?
'hope it gets saved when auctioned.

All right! But, an AC Unit does not seem to be present. A "Poor Petrol Consumption", I guess, implies an original engine, as-

Even if the engine were to be changed, a PETROL engine from, say, an Amby or a Fiat, would not be able to generate sufficient torque required to propel the car, at a decent speed.

The engines were quite similar to that of the Dodges. However, finding the Straight-Six......Is rather like attempting to find a needle in a haystack!

There was a time, when such engines were available....Dime-a-dozen!

And, I'm quite sure, the car will be saved, considering, Calcuttas large number of rather excellent restorers.

Have quite a soft spot for these, as I just missed out on one, few years previously.

Cheerio!

A bit off the thread: The one featured in Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (1958) was also a Dodge ?? Suburban. Black, light blue, cream and steel grey were quite popular original colours for the Dodge Suburban. The Kingsway used to be available in two tone colours too !

Sad indeed, especially the Herald! Nice to see a Studey from AP though!
I could be wrong but it looks more like these cars are outside a garage.
Was it a garage, which I believe is located in the basement of an apartment building? The Herald seems to be one that was in Jaipur and sold through an Auto India ad a few years ago, had in fact missed out on buying it then:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/attach...ia-mark133.jpg

I was told it then went to Delhi and then ended up in Bangalore, and was said to have landed at the abovementioned garage for restoration, as seen here:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...ml#post1641393

Sad to know that it remained unfinished- or rather unstarted! Maybe the owner didn't pay up or maybe it is in the 'pending' list. Though it's so dirty, the fittings like trims etc. are still intact.

Yes Shyam, all these cars are outside an Apartment, in the basement of which is the garage. The garage is called Popular Automobiles, located in Vasanthnagar, near cantonment, Bangalore.

Yes Karthik. Thats the place.
Had been to the electrician who works there.
So are they in line to be restored? There seems to be some oldies (another herald/gazel? and a couple of others too) being worked on at the garage.
Pity that these beauties are left to rot in the open. The Stude has most of the original fittings in place and a very very decent body line.
