It is always good to see such cars kept in pristine shape even so many decades later, mostly as a result of some serious bawa passion. . Warm regards, Arunabh
Dear Arunabh - thanks for your kind words on "bawa-passion"! . I have seen MTJ354 a couple of times being driven very carefully by a senior citizen lady. I see this trend here in Pune, quite a few white Padminis lying outside garages all over the city! Maybe the intent is to let it rot for a long time and then to grab it for nothing or a pittance. Even in case of major mechanical work, it does not take more than 3 days to put a Padmini back on the road. Most of the cars are opened and then deliberately left to rot. Normal customers will have no choice, except to give up the car after a lot of time goes like this. Sad! .

A senior citizen gentleman who was relocating out of Pune, from who I bought one of my cars told me how he had to shell out quite a bit of money to get the paperwork in order. He requested to me to give him the paperwork amount in addition to the car cost. Looking at his seniority and the thorough gentleman that he was, I agreed, so that he was relieved and I got absolutely perfect paperwork. From this episode, it seems that somebody was playing behind the scene and everything was ready, but I picked up the car just in the nick of time, so somebody missed a perfectly created opportunity! Although nothing will ever be proved, people must be careful.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

I have never seen one of these before or even heard of them - it appears it could be based on a Morris Oxford MO, which was the predecessor to the Oxford III that the Ambassador was based on - anybody know if this is correct?

Yes, absolutely!
These were apparently badge-engineered versions of the MO, followed by the Landmaster (a/k.a Morris Oxford s II) and finally the ser. III/Ambassador.

Quite correct! The Hindustan 14 was a re-badged version of the Morris Oxford. My uncle (a doctor in Allahabad) ran a Hindustan 14 for many years in the late fifties/early sixties with great satisfaction.

The Hindustan 14 was basically the Morris Oxford MO Series of Morris Motors (later BMC). The Hindustan 14 was made by HM from 1949-53. It was powered by a side valve 1476 cc engine that was also used to power the Landmaster (1954-57) and later the early Ambassadors (MO Series III) from 1958 till late 1959.

The BMC 1489 cc OHV engine came in December 1959 for Ambassadors. Whereas, Morris had changed over to the OHV (1489 cc) ever since 1954 to equip the MO Series II.

The BMC OHV engines of the era were basically old-tech engines. The automotive world elsewhere (Western Europe predominantly) had already moved on to OHC engines (SOHC, DOHC or twin-cam configuration) which were gradually making their presence felt in main-stream models too.

Here in our country, the FIAT models of the era, well loved as they are - for their Cisistalia mechanical roots - still stuck to OHV engines. I dont recall any OHC engines being manufactured here till the advent of Maruti & later the M&M Scorpio and others.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

It's getting more and more difficult finding cars which exist as in photographs below, but they are still around.

This might be one of the first cross marque car that I am seeing with such an early body. The main body looks definitely English and even an indication from the interior door lock and handle. Someone plonked a Ford V8 to get some pep...wheels are American again can reign From a GM brand which came with a large cap. Rear wheel looks like it's plonked much later . Any history to this car .

Cheers
