Pics: Merryweather Vintage Fire Engine from Gujarat

Thanks to Dr. K. B. Patel for sharing these pics with us enthusiasts!

I am sharing pics of one of the rarest vintage fire engines of India.

Manufacturer : Merryweather, London. This truck is located in my home town - Gulf Of Khambhat (Gujarat).

It belongs to the Nawaab of Khambhat and has a very interesting story. As per the word with locals, the govt. once tried to sell that truck claiming that its a govt. property. Nawaab came to know about this and immediately took action against the govt. Now he has got a stay w.r.t. selling that vehicle as in year 1900s it was imported by his ancestors, and so the owner is Nawaab as per High Court. Still, the case is going on.

Wow, what a find!
Any restoration project in mind?
This just reminds me of the show: kings of restoration

Oops, just read about the ongoing litigation :(

Whats that Lucas-TVS box doing on that fire engine from the 1900s? This joint venture came in only in the early 60s. That box (fuse box?) looks to be retrofitted albeit long time back (when Chennai was called Madras).

Edit: Interestingly, this part is available on sale on ebay even today as "New Old Stock"!

Truly an interesting find, hope there's light at the end of tunnel for this truck.
BTW feel proud to share that Lucknow fire Department too has a Merryweather truck which often is the lead car (vehicle) in most of our local Vintage & classic rallies here.
