Re: Pre-War Military Vehicles in India

The Courier from 1942

Google translation of the text.

Quote:
Armored car against Indian crowds

In Bombay the British launched tanks of armored vehicles against the unarmed mass, who have made numerous victims
This appears to be a bit of exaggeration, or something like this really happened ?

In 1942 with the Quit India movement and the protests at August Kranti in Mumbai (near Nana Chowk) such acts were real. Only an occupying power needs armoured cars with machine guns to maintain peace!! <I'll have to kill you for your own good> It tells us something about the British. Shashi Tharoor's ''An era of darkness'' is worth a read.

Re: Pre-War Military Vehicles in India

An interesting story from Calcutta. Rolls Royce Silver Ghost armoured cars of the Calcutta Presidency Battalion Auxiliary Force that assisted the Calcutta Police in 1919 for over 2 months in curbing the disturbances that occurred then. The Presidency Battalion Auxiliary Force was disbanded after the independence in 1947.

Seen outside the battalion garage. They were usually kept inside Fort William but there was also a city garage which was situated in Strand road. Source:- Facebook page of Calcutta a photographic memory.

Re: Pre-War Military Vehicles in India

What happens to the thousands of military vehicles after they have ended their service life? Specialised combat vehicles are likely to be scrapped, but the vast majority of the trucks, vans, cars and bikes end up auctioned - like this one advertised in 1966. I have seen some RC books of such vehicles which are later converted to civilian use after sale, they mentioned MD or Military Disposal.

The staff car is a 1942 Plymouth 5 window Town Sedan. Note that the fenders have been removed for clearance into the C-46.

Re: Pre-War Military Vehicles in India

Temporary bridge along the Ledo Road, ca 1943.

Pre-War Military Vehicles in India-fb_img_1585724890920.jpg

Wikipedia
Quote:
The Ledo Road was an overland connection between India and China, built during World War II to enable the Western Allies to deliver supplies to China and aid the war effort against Japan. After the Japanese cut off the Burma Road in 1942 an alternative was required, hence the construction of the Ledo road.

Maj Gen. Dudley Russell, 8th Indian Infantry Division.

Wouldn't doors have been a simpler way of getting in and out in a starched uniform ?

The car might be a chopped 41/42 Chevy perhaps? And doors welded shut for whatever reason.
