The Mercedes W123 Archive: Pics, Videos & Reviews

Well, these cars are something else. Some years ago we had an American couple staying with us. They had lived in the Netherlands for six years and we had become good friends. We kept visiting them in Texas and they kept coming to the Netherlands. One year they were looking at extending their stay with us by adding a week touring through Germany. I helped them plan it and I lend them my 1982 W123.

Whilst in Germany, waiting for a Red light, they got rear ended by some Japanese car. The owner/driver was a German priest. Which shows that even divine enlightenment doesn't necessarily make you a good driver. He just crashed into them! Long story short. The little Japanese car was totalled and a write off. The bumper on my poor W123 was slightly dented and out of whack!

Now that is German Grundligheit for you!

Here's a W123 that is showcased in Umaid Bhawan, Jodhpur. Also part of the stable was a gorgeous Rolls Royce. The Mercedes W123 Archive: Pics, Videos & Reviews-img_20180103_111118_1519098644815.jpg

Recent write up by Mark Cosovich, known as Europe's "guru" of the W123 model.

He is most definitely one of the W123 Guru's. He has written a fantastic book about the w123. Very comprehensive.

His main business is restoring W123 and I have seen several of his cars over the years and they look magnificent. The attention to detail is unbelievable. He even irons the cloth toolset. Check him out on Facebook.

I have never met him, but I did have a bit of a altercation with him. His website used my photographs on the W123 Attempt at the Guinness Worldrecord attempt in 2016 without my consent. This despite that all images were clearly watermarked with my name and TeamBHP.

But people who know him tell me it is the Mark way or no way. But his knowledge and workmanship are beyond reproach.

Still hoping we get to meet someday Jeroen! If you can find a genuine factory MB tow bar for the W123, you'll be adding a serious level of protection to the car's rear.

It took two people to carry the tow bar while the 3rd bolted it to the frame at the factory mounting points.

Let me know when you ever find yourself in the Netherlands.

About ten years ago I managed to find a second hand original MB tow bar. Mounting it is, apart from the weight, a bit of a fiddle. Part of it you need to get spacers in between the various bolts that go through the double sided bottom of the boot.

In the end I decided I did not like to have a hook, so I sold it on again

Here's a clip highlighting the detailed development of the W123's legendary engineering. And some cool 70's tracks!
