The wheel is the same as the Herald. These later Super 10s all had them, the earlier models carried them over from the 8, with ribbed spokes, less dished.

While the club is an excellent resource and very helpful, I doubt they would have India specific details. All cars in Europe I have seen with an off white wheel. However someone who had one brand new insisted his was black, as also in another very original unrestored car in Pune. So will probably stick with black.

This is always a challenge we face when looking at home market cars for reference - same case with Fiats, even with Dodges, Chevys and more.

Some updates

The headliner has gone in and looks great. Not too sure what exact shade the original would have been, but I am sure this can't be very far off.

Some more fittings go in. All door (and boot) hardware is in.

We decided to fit new glass all round (except the rear windscreen which is curved). The originals were all there, but badly scratched, and would look terrible on a newly restored car. All side trims fitted too, and really lift an otherwise bland profile.

Looks good Karl.

The Door Inside beadings haven't been fixed I guess - hence, clips are visible, right ?

Also the windscreen gourmet beading - is it greay in colour or just looks so in the photo. With the colour of the car, there could be a clash, black wouldve been nice.

Great perseverence Karl

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Yup, those will be fitted shortly. Not sure but the originals would probably have been cloth wrapped, and I think red in colour. We will be fitting regular black rubber though.

It is black of course, just the light in the image is probably giving you that impression. It is identical to the original in profile, but locally sourced so we saved some much needed money

I am still looking for the bakelite unit that houses the indicator lever and speedo frame, if anyone can help me. Thanks.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

Some updates for the new year.

16th January 2018

1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration-02.jpg

Fitting continues. The rear red reflectors that fit below the taillights were missing, and reproductions are frightfully expensive, so till I find a correct set, we have fitted a close match. Even Made in England, though a Vauxhall part.
1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration-03.jpg

The Super 10 (and earlier models) had a small indicator bulb wired into the end of the stalk, and that flashes synchronized with the indicator itself. We were missing the end cap, and a new one was procured in green (originals were probably brown? Not sure).
1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration-04.jpg

As mentioned earlier, the seats had the original upholstery underneath but too far gone to retain. Luckily pattern reference was available.

1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration-06.jpg

Original door pads were missing, even for a pattern. As luck would have it, a friend in Pune had the original set from his car, and served as good reference. There are various designs internationally, and this particular single tone design seems to befit Indian models. The style is very similar to the material and design used for later Heralds.

The interior is finally in. I assume the original door beadings would have been red or cream, maybe fabric wrapped.

The front grille moustache is ready and fitted after some adjustments. Bumpers go on as well.

Car is looking great Karl. The attention to detail is amazing and enjoyed the restoration thread so far. This is far better than what it was when the car came out of the showroom.

This should be a very pleasing runner.

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words. The team is working hard

I have used a Pennant for a few years extensively, and they are pretty quick and tight to drive, handling well. There are 2 common issues - the steering box, which by design is very poor, and the hydraulic clutch and brake cylinders were always prone to leakage. That could also be attributed to poor quality of spares. I am running modern adaptations, hopefully should be totally reliable.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

Finally the closing stretch.

With the annual Bombay rally on the 11th of Feb, it was an ideal opportunity to finish the car in time. The car was mostly completed, and finishing touches like the lights, knobs etc went in. For now the horn button is a later one with silver centre, it seems the original was plain full black (I initially thought it would be the same as the Herald with a shield). New plates with cast letters and an AA and RAC badge were the finishing touch.

The first proper trial was driving to the venue for judging and the car has really turned out superb. The only niggling issue is the steering which I have to wrestle with, hopefully will be sorted soon. The engine runs freely, brakes don't jam, suspension settling in (still high at the rear). I was joined by Stanher for the event, who took these pics

I am so relieved to complete this car, 10 years after we bought it As always, the team really put in a lot of effort, and it shows.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

You get 10/10 for perseverance; 9.9/10 for the quality of restoration; 5/10 for the finishing parade photographs - make up for it

Bravo. I love your restorations.

Except, I might add, for the last one, in which I (in the car) was taken rather than took a pic. of!

Was fun riding along, btw! And agree the team has indeed done a really good job!

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

Superb documentation of the step by step restoration.

The 1st owner probably bought the car after seeing this advertisement.

There are not many Standards around which are restored to this high level and therefore it will be standing out among the crowd. Very well restored.

Cheers harit

This lovely old family photo was shared on the Bygone Bangalore facebook page, showing the interior of a family's trusted Standard Companion.

Note the white (light?) steering wheel, as well as contrasting white/grey piping for the seats. Some valuable points, so thought I'd share.
