Thanks - how I wish my car had an invoice like this! The car is a one owner car and has recently been beautifully restored.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

What a great job. Congratulations. My father bought a second hand Standard 10 from Bombay for a princely sum of Rs 8000/-. A driver was hired to drive the car to Broach (Bharuch) where we lived. It was a two colour job, as most Standard 10's were and smart looking.Cream and Green. And the number was MRZ 7248. This was in 1968.
We (my father, mother and i) drove to Madras from A'bad in it during 1969 and apart from the petrol filter coupling coming loose from the carburettor and a couple of leaf springs falling off, we did not have any problems at all. I trained for a month or so, after school, at a local garage to learn basic maintenance issues.

I recently lost my father (3 months back) and he was still a great car buff at 88- he had bought a new car just 9 months before he died.

After reading about what you did, i do wish i had the presence of mind to have done something similar for him. I had the money, the time and could have hired some capability. He would have loved it. It is my loss that i did not think about it.

I drove this car when i was just 13 years old. And got caught by a local Bharuch policeman too. My father had to attend the court and apologise for my behaviour. Still remember that scene after he came back. Soon enough, i was packed off to a boarding school in Baroda. ( There was no english medium school in Broach those days and i had a happy time goofing off)

Thank you for sharing this. Incidentally, i always thought that the 'Super 10' was dowdy looking, whereas the '10' was smart and trim.

Thanks for sharing the memory! Any pics. of your father's car?
Sorry to hear about him btw! My condolences.
Just to clarify- when you say 'Standard 10', was your car in the same shape as this:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7322/2...76cb3f2e_b.jpg

If so, then the car your father had was a Pennant. Which was of course, badged and sold as a "standard 10" in India, which can get really confusing!

Yes, I agree with you that the Pennant was a cosmetic improvement on the Super 10, though maybe not technologically! I had one too in cream and blue.

Yes, that was it. But i distinctly seem to remember a flowing standard 10 emblem at the back?

Apologies to the OP. Didn't mean to hijack his thread.

Yes, and at the front too, on the bonnet emblem. As I mentioned in my post above, these cars were badged and sold as "Standard 10" in India.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

Came across another ad dated 1957 showing a nice illustration of the car. Here too, like other ads and period pictures, the car is shown without side trims. I'm really wondering now if mine were fitted later, as an accessory...

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

Some updates, long overdue.

25th April 2017

Tin work continued, highlighted here is the new rear parcel shelf being fabricated, and the bootlid bottom.

With minor finishing left, some mock fitting had begun as well.

The car was rolled out to get a better look and perspective - from a distance, different POV etc.

By end September the car was scraped down once more, to start the application of primer.

The petrol filler slot had been closed some years back, we need to reverse this now.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

6th October 2017

The pace has picked up! The front sub frame and front valance is out, the driveshaft is out. The subframe and other suspension components go off to powder coating.

The original engine is now off for detailing, after already being overhauled.

This is the bakelite fixture on the dash where the steering wheel fits. Unfortunately a large piece is missing - any leads on a replacement part? Locally or internationally. Would be highly appreciated.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

The car had some very cool period seat covers, which must have been fitted decades back. Below them was another set, and finally the original - dark red with grey piping, not white.

The sides unfortunately are very badly frayed and with portions missing, we will probably have to make new upholstery - I was really looking forward to saving these though. Another problem then is matching the door pads - I still haven't done that in my Fiat!

If I might suggest, you could get some removable cloth covers fitted over these so you could display the original seats during rallies etc.?
Doing the same (for now) with my Herald which still has the original seats intact - except for some holes that had been driven through them to draw the strings used to tie the later covers onto them! Yet, I want them to be visible so for the front seats atleast (since they tend to get 'used' more, especially the driver's seat) I got these cloth covers that are fairly loose fitting and can be taken off at will.

Re: 1958 Standard Super 10 - Restoration

11th October 2017

Work continues at a quick pace. The car is totally stripped bare, undercoats and filler work in progress. The engine bay is surprisingly clean, I don't think any finishing work was done so far other than scraping it down.
Final mock fitting of the grille and bumpers before it is off to the platers. The petrol filler spout also reverted to original.
