Drive to the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon

Heritage Transport Museum is located in Tauru, Gurgaon (approx. 90 Kms drive from Delhi). I visited this place with BHPian Ashir & Anand few days back as part of our Delhi-Gurgaon Team BHP Meet.

I heard about this museum for the first time. It is located in a remote, not so popular & crowded area. That may be the reason it is not very popular. It is a good concept, I believe it to be a first of a kind. The museum showcases the evolution and timeline of transportation in India, beginning with the story of the wheel, vehicles that have been used in India since the advent of motoring. It also showcases commercial transportation, railways, aviation, two-wheelers and lots of historical and collections from the bygone automobile era!

In the classic car section, there are some 75 cars on display that will blow your mind with beauty they still hold till this day! A classic petrol pump model is also on display. A kind of memorabilia that any automobile lover would love to go through. The museum also showcases pre-historic transportation of India including palanquins, bullock carts etc. The bus section has some restored buses on display that were used in the past. Transportation in India is heavily dependent on railways and that has too very well displayed in the museum. Some locomotives, passenger train from early 1990s are on display.

Heritage transport museum displays evolution of aviation industry in India through posters, timeline showcases and advertisement. A restored Piper J3C aircraft is also on display that is interestingly hanging mid-air attached from top floor of the museum. Space utilisation in the museum is very good. It also has some old vehicles that were used for rural transportation. The two-wheeler gallery showcases evolution of two wheelers in India. Various bicycles, scooters, motorcycles including Royal Enfield, phat phat, auto etc are on display. Some vehicles will make you feel nostalgic. The museum also makes you recall your childhood by displaying some automobile toys we used play when we were kids! Toys made of wood, pedal cars and pedal cycles will make you run down to the memory lane.

re: Drive to the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon

Very nice pics and description.

I visited this place in July last year and liked it very much (clicked 300-400 pics). However, I didn't upload the pics because most of them are already there in this thread:

Thanks for sharing

Echo the same sentiments as you have mentioned about the place

Unless I missed seeing it there used to be a nice scale model of the Victoria terminus rail station (Mumbai) as part of the display

Re: Drive to the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon

Nice pics, thanks for sharing, Anmol!

I recently visited the Transport Museum in Lucerne, Switzerland and was blown away by how well they have documented and displayed the history of each medium of transport: rail (including mountain railway), air, water and land.

Having spent almost an entire day there, I thought to myself: hmm, I wish we had something similar in India. And we do!

I wish these guys did a better job - I wish India did a better job - at marketing our rich heritage.

This is on my to-do list when I'm in Gurgaon next!

Re: Drive to the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon

Looks like a well planned museum!! Goes in my list of places to visit
I have driven the Premier Padmini during early 90s and its nostalgic to find it sitting pretty in the museum now. I still can not forget how I used to remove the air filter to spit petrol into its carburettor every time I had to start it after a long gap.
I would have loved to see a few more gems in the likes of RD350, RX100 etc, or did I miss them?

Re: Drive to the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon

Wow!. I did not even know that such a well maintained transport museum existed in India.
I have only seen museums of this caliber outside India.
Thanks a lot for bringing us the images and making us aware of this. I will definitely visit it when I am up north next time around.

I am sure the photos only show us a glimpse of the stuff on display one gets to see on visiting the museum. Looks like its well worth the INR 400 per person entree fee they are charging.
It was interesting to see the Suzuki Shogun in amongst the display.

Cheerio!
