An "original" Iwis branded timing chain meant for the MB is on order, but I did not wish to wait for 5-6 weeks for it to arrive. Hence, decided to opt for a chain meant for the indigenised OM616. I understood from the dealer that this chain is meant for roadside mechanics, who don't have access to tools needed for reliably splitting /riveting links on chains, yet must ensure that a replaced chain lasts a minimum of 100,000 km or more, despite undertaking "field repairs". I wish we could have done this in a much cleaner and sanitised environment, with the correct "make" of chain, but car itself could not be moved from it's present location. Despite this, great pains were taken to clean each part removed from the engine, before reassembly. The factory service manuals are indeed being consulted, whenever needed. Subsequent timing chain replacements are expected to be less traumatic using this - | |

BHPian ![]() | ![]() Updates from 30th Jan An used two part prop shaft has been located. Unfortunately, it came off a car having a four speed gearbox, hence, it is about 2 inches longer than necessary. Will need to make another trip to the workshop/lathe to correct this. ![]() Using this opportunity to paint the engine block and clean up the underside. ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() Boss, looks like you are supporting several mechanics kids through College, yours is a true labour of love. People who are used to new-gen service centres and mechanics who just replace parts will not appreciate the heartache (and joy) this exercise brings. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. This is a very interesting thread. |

| ![]() Been following this thread so meticulously and have enjoyed every bit of the journey. Just when we were about to reach the climax of the wait, appears like the power failure and we are unable to see the final and much awaited beauty of the complete car. Fantatic and gripping read it has been thus far, awaiting the final pictures. |

BHPian ![]() | ![]() We have hit yet another glitch. The accelerator cable has snapped.. ![]() I had visited Javed's garage late last night. The grill and front registration plate have been screwed on. Sorry about the poor quality of photographs - it was pitch dark when these were taken. ![]() |
