Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Back at home(?) base in Bahrain and good to see the progress in the last 2 weeks.. It was a pleasure to have met you (Ani) and see the car.

As promised the original Becker stereo, a Hazard triangle and a jack (which will be sourced) are my contributions to the car and will be sent as soon as possible.

Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Updates from 11th January

The starter has developed a glitch and refuses to crank. It will be sent for service tomorrow.

The floor pans and trunk has been lined with waterproof membrane (applied over rubberised paint). Hopefully, this should afford better protection.

The trunk lid has been painted steel grey...

I totally agree with James' views. Putting a bitumen like layer directly on the sheet metal is a bad idea on old cars. If the carpets get wet, the damping material will trap moisture and the floors will start rusting.

In my opinion, a good quality rubber sheet shaped well and draped loose (not stuck with adhesive) under the carpets will be better. Even if there is moisture, air can pass under the loose rubber and you can remove the rubber sheets from time to time and check for rusting and address it.

I've been following this thread too and enjoying it; keep it up!

I guess it is a bit too late for that. We will have to see how it goes...

The solenoid switch and the carbon brushes were replaced and the starter was rebuilt.

Re: Mercedes W123 240D - Yet another addition to the family

Disaster has struck yet again.

It seems the timing chain has jammed while starting up the engine.

Trying to rotate the engine by hand has proved futile, hence, it looks like we have more work on our plate now.

It's good the engine was not running when this happened ..

That's a pain! Would be interesting to hear what caused it? Timing chain arrangement is very robust and I have come very little problems with it. Are you sure its the timing chain? Maybe something has dropped inside, that does happen to the best of us, unfortanelty.

Good luck!

Thanks.

Will try to inspect the sprockets which form part of the timing gear, check for broken guides & timing chain tensioner over the weekend.

Just noticed this one: The prop shaft is (or should be) balanced and you need to put it back together in the right orientation.

Here’s a good video:

Good luck

I honestly don't work how the timing arrangement works in diesels but another possibility could be that the timing chain jumped a few teeth and got jammed.

Other reasons of course, like already said, the chain guides, in case any of the holding pins have fallen through, or one of the intermediary pinions has moved out of alignment.

Hope it's resolved without much of an issue!

Thanks.

Assuming the chain tensioner works correctly, the chain should not have jumped across sprockets.

I suspect either of the following -

(a) a bolt may have inadvertently fallen into the engine through the oil filler cap

(b) a broken timing chain guide

(c) the oil pump had been removed from the engine and was replaced. Probably, the re-installation wasn't performed by the book, and it's fouling with the intermediate shaft

Updates from 17th January

We finally know the reason.

A snapped timing chain
