Nice! Now this really inspires!
Reg. the scooter, considering tis a BYJ (1960-61?) regn., I doubt tis an API and would've been an Innocenti Lambretta Li150- in which case, even the horncast (nose) wouldn't be original as it should've come with the smaller, round grille for the horn.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

The Yellow cruise of 1931

Some details from here

Quote:
The Yellow Cruise was planned for over three years (and therefore, had been set up soon after Haardt’s return from Africa), and was supposed to skirt the Caucasus and follow roughly the 40th parallel, crossing the Turkestan on Marco Polo’s footsteps, and then cross China.

But when the USSR authorities proved less than friendly, the course was altered to cross Afghanistan, and then go through the Cashmir passes.
But in 1931, a few weeks before the start of the expedition, the situation in Afghanistan heated up, and thus the course was altered again, this time leading the cars to the south – and requiring the cruise to cross the Himalayas into Chinese Turkestan.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

An interesting writeup I came across of a globetrotting Nigerian man - on a 1959 Lambretta LI150! He is said to have first travelled across the US starting 1952, as a student, on a bicycle! Eventually moved to the UK and continued his road trips, extending to various countries - including India - on his Lambretta until around the early 60s! He got to meet various heads of state in the countries he visited, including then p.m. JawaharLal Nehru in India!
Pictured below on his scooter in India, with Nehru sitting on it in another pic.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

7 Rajdoot bikes rode down from Calcutta to London as a publicity exercise. Unfortunately not dated.

In 1954 a David Brown tractor was towing a caravan - from London to Sydney! Here it is photographed when passing through India.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Thanks for sharing. Never knew that olden days also has such passionate people. What excites me is that in those days there was no internet, no WhatsApp, very few hotels and moreover very less first hand information. Still these passionate people managed such wonderful trips. Kudos to them. Man and machine at their best.
