Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day-jaipur-rr-pii-22gx-period.jpg

The Jaipur RR PII (22GX) in the Afghan desert, late 1960's.

It was presented to the Hon. Patrick Lindsay by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh as a wedding gift. The condition was that Patrick drove it back to the home country.

It then had 12,000 miles in 35 years!

Great one. What a way to welcome a beautiful sunny Sunday morning with a cup of hot coffee and an excellent new thread on T-BHP. Rating a well deserved 5 star

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Here is a story of a couple and their Beetle

Quote:
In 1960, Ivan and Beth Hodge bought a VW Beetle while on honeymoon in London. Now, after 54 years, two trips around the world and 188,000 miles,.....

The Hodges took their Beetle around Europe, through Portugal, Spain and France, then on to Yugoslavia. From there they continued through the Middle East to India....

On their way to Mumbai in 1996

Here is another interesting one posted earlier here (Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars)

Quote:
This piece appeared in 'The Motor' dated August 1958. It is an account of an overlander's experiences through India in his then brand new Ford Taunus

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Karl will be particular happy to note that a Standard Vanguard Estate Wagon (Phase 3) was used in 1960, for an overland trip for London to Kashmir and Back.

This is capture in a book available for sale here

Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day-1.jpg

Quote:
About the Book
A pictorial documentation of the experiences of a group of five college students driving from England to Kashmir and back in 1960 through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The purpose of the expedition was to demonstrate that the overland route from London to Kashmir was possible in an ordinary production car, and to report on the road conditions.

Some pictures from the book

The ordinary production car in question was a Standard !

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Here is the story of Aloha Wanderwell, supposedly the worlds most widely travelled girl.

Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day-aw51.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_Wanderwell

Quote:
The Story of a World Traveler
Aloha Wanderwell was born Idris Galcia Hall on October 13, 1906 in Winnipeg, the daughter of British Army reservist Herbert Hall and Margaret Headley Hall.

After her father was killed in action at Ypres in June 1917, her mother moved Idris and her younger sister to Europe. As the Great War drew to a close, Idris was enrolled in a convent school in France.

Devastated by the death of her father, young Idris displayed a restless spirit and was constantly at odds with her superiors at the convent school, who tried in vain to transform the 6 foot tall self-described “tomboy” into a proper young lady. Instead, inspired by the fantastic tales she read in her father’s beloved collection of boyhood books, Idris dreamed of travel, adventure, and intrigue in far-flung corners of the globe.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Check out
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/pre-wa...rland-60s.html a thread started by sat in November 2007.

So a Maharaj gifted these Swiss guys a Cadillac which they had to drive back to Switzerland. Supposed to have belonged to the ex ruler of Nagod, MP. And the car is supposed to be still with them, though up dated pics were never posted.
Images lifted from sat's post. Thank you sat!

Cheers harit

After reading your post, I was lucky to establish contact with Dr. MGS's son (Mr. D. Sahadevan ) and he has shared some pictures and a few diary entries from his dad's 1963 trip. I have asked him to share more pictures. Sorry for the picture quality.

That's great. Thanks for sharing

My dad is friends with him on Facebook (remember going through his album some time back). I had asked dad to see if it's okay to share the pics. You beat my dad to it

Waiting for more pics from the drive

Yes, Capt. Yates did beat the fast boat to Calcutta.
