The Jaipur RR PII (22GX) in the Afghan desert, late 1960's.

It was presented to the Hon. Patrick Lindsay by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh as a wedding gift. The condition was that Patrick drove it back to the home country.

It then had 12,000 miles in 35 years!

Here is a story of a couple and their Beetle

In 1960, Ivan and Beth Hodge bought a VW Beetle while on honeymoon in London. Now, after 54 years, two trips around the world and 188,000 miles,.....


The Hodges took their Beetle around Europe, through Portugal, Spain and France, then on to Yugoslavia. From there they continued through the Middle East to India....

This piece appeared in 'The Motor' dated August 1958. It is an account of an overlander's experiences through India in his then brand new Ford Taunus

Karl will be particular happy to note that a Standard Vanguard Estate Wagon (Phase 3) was used in 1960, for an overland trip for London to Kashmir and Back.

About the Book
A pictorial documentation of the experiences of a group of five college students driving from England to Kashmir and back in 1960 through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The purpose of the expedition was to demonstrate that the overland route from London to Kashmir was possible in an ordinary production car, and to report on the road conditions.

So a Maharaj gifted these Swiss guys a Cadillac which they had to drive back to Switzerland. Supposed to have belonged to the ex ruler of Nagod, MP. And the car is supposed to be still with them, though up dated pics were never posted.
