Re: The Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally - Kolkata on 28th Jan, 2018 Thank you for sharing these photos and bringing the event alive to us. KartikeyaL might bop me on the head but the Bongs are giving some very stiff competition to the Rajputs I have gazed and gazed at this thread from the 110 year old car, to the wild lilac pink Beetle VW to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw's Austin Sheerline when he used when headed the Eastern Command (titled Sheerline in post 9). His biography talks about how he pulled it out of the garage dump and had it restored for his use as Army Commander of the Eastern Command in 1967. It used to be the official car, in the late 1940s, of the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, General Roy Bucher *. He once once joked with Manekshaw that he (Sam) could never ever become senior enough to drive in an Austin Sheerline! Its original colour was silver. *This gentleman was responsible in 1948 from ordering Carriappa not to launch an attack on the southern salient in Kashmir thus preventing India from reoccupying the western areas of Kotli, Punch, Mirpur, Domel etc. Otherwise the entire piece of the Valley of Kashmir would have remained with India. A bit off topic but what to do -national pride pops up!
