The challenge starts from 21 September to Thursday 11 October 2018.

Brave souls! I am sure many of the Land Cruiser owners will give second thoughts and here they are risking their prized possessions. Hope they have some idea where they are venturing to. Will be interesting to see, how many return on their own given the road conditions at least in Himachal.

These are die hard car guys, I am sure they have done a lot of stuff like this before in all kinds of terrain.

These are old cars. In fact very very old cars. These cars look well-maintained. No doubt about enthusiasm and ability of owners/drivers but are these cars that fit enough to tackle the roads of the Himalayas?

it's raining continuously in this part since yesterday morning. Drivers being experienced or not, I am feeling bad for these beauties. Will be interesting to find what happens eventually and how many brave souls continued beyond Manali.

Sadly, we heard that Margo O’Brien Coelho and George Coelho are looking for a hire car this evening. Their Volvo has lost its clutch and there’s no way of repairing it anytime soon.

Andy Mudra and Gernot Woerle are still absent. They’re with their Bentley in Delhi looking for a solution to the misfiring issue. The plan now is for them to shortcut straight to Manali and join us after the rest day.

DAY 3

SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

McLeod Ganj to Manali
Bridges over troubled Water

As we left the comfortable surroundings of McLeod Ganj, almost dry after yesterday’s deluge, few of us imagined what lay ahead.

Today the rules of endurance rallying were re-written and the topography of Himachal Pradesh was forever changed. Thanks to the incessant heavy rain, today’s route saw bridges and roads washed away, tracks and forests swallowed by landslides and rivers turned into black boiling torrents.

Major flooding, serious landslides and two collapsed bridges called for some quick thinking and a spur of the moment re route and diversion from John Spiller. The Beas River which ran alongside the road for many kilometres was in full spate and in many places the thundering current looked close to claiming some waterside property as well as sections of road on the opposite bank.

Roy Stephenson and Peter Robinson damaged a rear shock absorber during the afternoon and will likely use the rest day to give it a good checking over.

Roland Singer and Hans Malus also had a frustrating day, initially their Saab struggled with overheating but later a fuel pump seemed to have developed an intermittent fault.

Tomorrow is a rest day in Manali, so we’ll have some time to kill and Matt Bryson was been busy this evening looking for volunteers to fill a couple of whitewater rafts he’s hired.

Great rally, very divers field of cars too. Good to see quite a few ladies participating too!.

These cars are old, of course. But they will not only be well maintained, but also well prepared. And some will be prepared to handle bumpy, rocky terrain. Escpecially low slung car. (e.g. sump guards, better shocks etc). The interesting thing with classic cars is that they are often relatively easy to repair and don't require too much in terms of special tooling.

Friends of ours joining one of these rally's some years ago driving from Amsterdam to Singapore in a Alfa Spider without any major problems.

I have done a few of these, although never this extensive. But my experience is that the old cars often do better than the modern cars. When we drove seven cabrio's top down to the pole circle in -27oC, the three classic Alfa Spiders did fine. The problem was the new Porsche Boxer and to a lesser extent even the Volvo.

There are various organisations around the world that specialize in organising these events. It's good fun, but you need to have a lot of free time and money!

That's a 1958 Morris Oxford, the Ambassador was based on Morris Oxford series III.

Like I said, good fun on these rally’s, you never know what to expect. Part of the fun is getting yourself into unknown situations and having to deal with it.

Don’t want to steal this thread, but I thought I would share a few rally piccies.

This is from the Pole circle Rally I attended some years ago. Admittedly, we were expecting, snow, lots of snow and very low temperatures!







There was some sunshine too, but still at -27oC. My spanner mate Peter and me.
