Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Some classic Maruti enthusiasts from Mumbai had planned a classic car drive to recreate the experience of displaying the first-generation Maruti 800 on occasion of its 35th anniversary. Like-minded classic Maruti owners and enthusiasts drove down their vehicles from south Mumbai to Jogeshwari and displayed their vehicles outside the Maruti showroom.

The event was organised by the CME - Classic Maruti Enthusiasts and FortPoint Automotive at their new Arena dealership at Hubtown Viva, Jogeshwari in Mumbai.

The highlight of the event were the 3 oldies placed inside the showroom - the 800 (SS80), the Maruti Van and the Gypsy, with period correct posters, banners and relevant pictures:

The event started with a gathering in the morning at Horniman Circle in south Mumbai. For a change, this place was today filled up with Maruti cars instead of the supercars and vintage vehicles that we usually see. There was a chit-chat session and ample ogling at others' vehicles. Here is a glimpse of the same:

Tricked-out Gypsys also made an appearance. I especially liked the one with the white rims:

Most of them had extra lights and big tyres. Notice the snorkel intake on the right one:

This Maruti 1000 belongs to Mr. Amol Nayak:

AC and a cassette tape / AM / FM music system:

Mr. Vinaykumar Chumble came from Nashik in his Omni. He had also participated in the recent Mercedes Classic Car Parade with his W115 'art-car'. The paint job on the car was neat and made the van standout from the crowd:

The large rear doors, boxy design and the utility aspect of the van made it successful! Even today you can find the Omni in the top 20 best-selling cars every month:

Simple, functional interiors and it a 4-speed manual gearbox. Notice the 2-spoke steering with two separate horn buttons:

Another of the Maruti 800s (SS80) from Pune:

This Zen even came with the accurate number plates design and font! Some say that number plate in those days, especially ones like these, were indestructible:

Notice the 'Greenwheels' sticker - this Zen runs on unleaded fuel which was then considered environment friendly :

I loved the red colour on this Zen. The Japanese sticker on the left looks neat. Notice the 12-inch rims. Older Zens came with 13-inchers:

This brown SS80 with an all-black grille looks menacing:

It had larger aftermarket alloy wheels and a functioning sunroof as well:

The route to Jogeshwari went via the Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge and all the drivers were driving in a neat formation one behind the other. Multiple stops ensured ample photo opportunities. Curious bystanders were seen amazed by the sight and mobile phones were swiftly taken out to click pictures.

First halt was on Marine Drive:

This is Noel's 5-speed. It has a free-flow exhaust that just sounds amazing:

The showroom had 3 cars on display - BHPian johannskaria and noelnelly's SS80, Mr. Vinaykumar Chumble's Maruti Van and Mr. Gamadia's Gypsy MG410.

The backdrop of this image has been recreated to look like the one from when the first 800 rolled off the production line 35 years ago:

The poster alongside has the actual photo of the first 800:

It wasn't the Omni from day one. It started out as the Maruti Van before being renamed:

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

It all feels like a dream. The usual Sunday morning parking spots which was occupied by the rarest of Vintage and classic cars or the collection of supercars stood a fleet of classic Maruti cars. And boy, I was glad to be part of that. Reminding me so much of my childhood days.

The backdrop of St Thomas Cathedral at the Horniman circle was just the perfect place of assembly.
Delighted owners along with their families and friends, who are mostly new crop of classic car enthusiasts were more than happy to meet fellow enthusiasts and interact with them. Infact the old charm of Bombay was brought back to life in those settings. Enthusiasts drove down from Mysore, Pune and Nasik for this day which made it even more special.

The common sight at these events are broken down cars just before the rally and flat bed’s waiting for them. But not for the Classic Maruti Day rally. It really showed why the Indians whole heartedly embraced the reliable Maruti cars as the competition was known to be too big, unreliable and most of all not economical at all. There are stories of people taking their spares and tools while going on a long drive in Padmini’s and Ambassadors.

All the cars joined for the drive through picturesque Mumbai with old buildings, beautiful sea face and empty streets of Mumbai in the backdrop. The enthusiasts drove the cars till Fortpoint Arena Showroom, Jogeshwari where we were part of opening the showroom for business.

The showroom was decked up by first lot of Maruti models released in India. And even had display of their respective posters and the TVC’s playing on the big screens. It featured our (Me and Bhpian Noel Nelly’s) humble first restoration project #ProjectDinky recreating the iconic photo, Mr. Vinaykumar’s Maruti van which was visiting Mumbai after 17 years and Mr. Gamadia’s immaculately restored Gypsy.

This was one of the most connected showroom opening I’ve got the chance to attend. And hopefully this Classic Maruti Day helps people to take note of the humble classic Maruti cars as bonafide classic cars and restore them.

Gosh, what a unique & crazy event! Rating thread 5 stars. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, guys . I wish I'd made it. Please do let me know when this is happening next. I'll come in my "Classic" .

Some of these beauties look like they just rolled out of a Maruti showroom. Amol's Maruti 1000 reminds me of my Esteem, and that shot of the dash air-vents & stereo took me back to the cabin of my car!

Love the attention-to-detail shown by the owners. Heck, some cars are wearing the same number-plates from the 80s & 90s. I recognize the style.

Quote:

Damn, even the black plate + white fonts are from that era.

Am sending a link of this thread to Maruti. It's the only heritage they'll ever have. Maruti had better step forward & support such events in the future.

P.S. If anyone is wondering what this thread is doing in the 'Classics' forum, let me say this = Team-BHP went live in 2004 and at that time, 1969 cars found a place in this forum itself. The Marutis on this thread are the same 35-years of age. No further discussions on this matter please.

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Fantastic thread Blackwasp! Thank you. It let me fill with nostalgia.

I wish I could be one of those to attend and drive down in my second gen Feb '87 Maruti 800, if at all I was still owning it. I have my childhood memories associated with it and none other car can ever take its place ever no matter how advanced it be.

Thanks to NGT guidelines, after 29 years of ownership we were forced to get rid of it in 2016 with still a lot many SGP OEM parts and the original F8B engine working just fine. Not to mention, the original paint.

Can't stop myself sharing my Evergreen here:

Loved it.

Especially the showroom setting was so cool.
For a change, the Omni is being treated with nostalgia and respect, instead of the usual vitriol.

Only sad part is we as a nation can only have at most a Maruti, HM and PAL car show (Standard motors gang are so rare).

Really hope the authorities come up with a rolling year criteria for old cars to be classified as classic/vintage/youngtimer

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Lovely report, Blackwasp. A very good job by the organisers and nice of the Bafnas to convert their showroom to a "classic car" display for the day.

It's great to see so many of these older Maruti cars together. Good to see enthusiasts still taking care of these old girls (van included). My extended family's been through so many Maruti cars over the years and not one of them has disappointed us.

Totally. My Contessa came with one of these. It's the most durable plate I've ever used on any car and has the best font of them all. Has to be my favourite.

Awesome event organisation, loved it.

My 19 year old gal celebrated the Classic Maruti Day by leaving on a 1500km road trip, and it's been a fun one till now. Some pics from the solo drive:

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Blackwasp, Many thanks.

Brings back a lot of memories.

Classic & Maruti were not considered to belong in the same sentence until recently, looking at some of these examples - They sure are classic cars, at least three of them.

Good to see Omni being added to the classic cars list, 6 months back I was looking for an SS80 and boy they were very expensive in comparison to a M800s of the 2000s.
So it was apparent that someone is buying them for a high price.

I always felt that Mk1 Omni was better than their later models, I remember long ago, sweeping away the cobwebs in my friend`s barn and hauling out a red Mk1 Omni , his father pulled the carb out, cleaned it and off we go. All good for a while and then it stopped, wait for it to cool down and off we go again. The vehicle was well put together, the gears slotted better, there were no unusual drive line noise \ rattles like the later models.

The M1000`s dashboard is the same as the Esteem 95 which we had IIRC, the almost useless AC vents included. It is good to see that all the plastic knobs on the AC slider has survived, well taken care of.

I do not think apart from SS80, Mk1 Omni & Gypsy, anything else can be considered a classic Maruti. But that is just me.

Thanks Blackswap to memorize the Maruti arena and the good old maruti days.

Just Yesterday I drove Maruti 800 MPFI with 5 speed gearbox of my uncle. Initially I suggested him to upgrade to automatic Maruti celerio or i10.

But later i drove the car and instantly got smile on my face and my conclusion was keep the car as is and use it till it stops working.

That Blue OMNI was easily the showstopper for me. It had me drool at its simplistic beauty over and over again.
Its front looked so beautiful, as compared to the ugly rectangular job they have now.
OMNI will soon be a classic, as its slated to be decommissioned due to safety norms.

Just wish we get to see that High-Roof version some day in such events.
I still have 1:43 Scale model of OMNI from Centy toys and I really adore it.

Buying that Gen-1 OMNI has been a dream for me, I hope to fulfill that dream someday.

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Excellent report. Rated 5*

All the cars look mint except one sky blue SS80.

The sky blue Maruti Omni and the Maruti 1000 will be my pick from the lot. The old Zen's and the M800's look awesomely maintained too. Hats off to the respective owners.

This thread took me back to my school life in 90's.

Maruti is dominating the Indian car market for 35 years and that's not without a reason. This company understand the best, what majority of the Indian car buyers want. People may call them tin cans or abuse Maruti but at the end this is the company which made cars affordable to most of the Indian middle class families. Kudos to Maruti. Wish them similar success for the coming years.

Two Maruti's owned by us till date -

Re: Classic Maruti Day, 2018 - A meet & drive with early Maruti models

Ah so there is some story in here then. I am not surprised by that, it takes a while after seeing plastic cars to be able to appreciate the metal frame of the Mk1 Omni`s wing mirror or the Mk1 Gypsy`s metal frame wing mirror.

As the saying goes - Vintage cars can be classic cars but classic cars does not necessarily need to be a vintage car.

We now have newly made classics as well, the Gypsy, Thar etc. On the two wheeler front, Jawa, RE650 Twins and many other REs. Exciting times for someone who likes more metal than plastic.
