Could be an original one, that has been messed up a bit. I am sure GURUS will be able to identify its genuinity. The steering assembly is quite an eyesore.

There is a small town on the Chandigarh- Simla road, where low bonnet jeeps (Ford, Willys or anyone wants any other brand???) are made or rather given birth by the garages there.

The make all-new low bonnet jeeps (cheap) or else use donor jeeps to assemble one (a bit costlier). The jeeps so made are sold in many parts of the country with "PB" number plates. The RTO papers are not genuine and the owner is told to get his own papers made.

A totally newly born , low bonnet jeep can be seen in these pictures:

Afraid I don't frequent this section, but couldn't help sharing this photograph that I came across in Kolkata.

The car may be readily identifiable to a lot of folks, but the source of this photo, taken sometime in the mid-1950s, was the person who was peering under the hood. A wizard of an auto electrician and a good friend of my father, he is still alive and well. A person by the name of Gautam Prasad Gupta. I just met him today.

Yes indeed. Gautam Prasad Gupta has also had the pleasure of meeting Netaji himself sometime in the past. The man standing next to the car is reportedly someone by the name of Ramachandran. A little Googling turns up the document below:

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

I had given my Linea for curtain replacement and coding for keys and on the way out of Service Center I saw these three cars waiting for restoration/undergoing restoration near Rama Road,New Delhi

The first car is 1950s Austin A40 Somerset ( Austin's answer to Morris minor) which was produced from 1952 to 1954.This car here is a two door model and registration shows it to be a Pondicherry registered one ( P U E - XXXX ).The car was designed by Dick Burzi,

The Second car appears to be a Morris 8 series E produced from 1938 to 1948.This car appears to be late model two door car probably 1946- 48
( absence of swept back headlamps)

The Third car though not a vintage or true classic but a modern classic - LHD VW Golf mark 1 in base C trim level.

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

The green car is an Austin A35 and not a Somerset which was a bigger car. possably a 54 or 57 model. I have a van version of the similar car. There was or used to be a few of these cars in Bangalore many years ago.

Mod Note : Please quote ONLY the relevant bits of a post. Quoting a full, long post inconveniences our mobile readers.

Thanks!

It is NOT a Pondicherry registered car. "PU" could stand for the Punjab, methinks.

Hardly any series were issued from Pondicherry.

There used to be a "P" registration. Then came "PYP", "PYQ", "PYS". "PYR", was Pondicherry commercial, I guess.

Our 1100D was registered on the 10th of November 1972, in Pondicherry. Registered "PYS/5775". Now, she runs on a Bombay registration.

Cheers!

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

My friend, Avik, saw this gorgeous 1957 Morgan at the BIC few days back. It is supposedly powered by a 2.0 liter Vauxhall engine, produces 110 bhp and has twin SU carburetors borrowed from a MG-B.

Looks quite similar to the Delhi created aberration!

Where did you see it? Ithink it's the same car, a contessa turned into what you see, call it whatever.

I think its the same Delhi car you mention above, as it is clicked at the Buddh International Circuit.

But is it seriously a Contessa ?

Yes it looks similar to Mr. Tutu Dhawan's Morgan, but is this based on a Contessa? I doubt.

Apparently the owner found this carcase lying half buried in some tea estate in Assam, procured it from there and built it to what is now a gleaming beauty.
