Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

Anyone know if this Traction Avant is for sale? I find it interesting. Don't know much about them though.

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

Hi,

Posting these on behalf of a friend who has owned this Morris mini minor from new, he believes it may be one of the first three cars ever to come into India. He was also featured in a UK based Mini magazine of which he has sent me a picture. He is extremely fond of his car and makes regular trips to Bangalore from Goa just to pick up parts for the same!

Regards,

Srinand.

Dear Fintail - it is nice to see the photographs of MHJ 8497 after eight and a half years! I am posting two photographs of MHJ 8497 which I had taken on 15 August 2006 at the police training ground in Pune. This was the first Fiat Classic Car Club Pune drive meet that I had attended. Those headlights are not big, they are the correct size.

In my opinion, BYH 3282 is by far the best dukkar fiat in Pune, it is my all time favorite. It is owned by my very good friend and FCCCI Pune member Mr.Dhananjay Badamikar!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

travancore you are correct.

Dear Fintail,

Part of your information is incorrect. There is nothing called as semi monocoque. The citroen was a unibody /unichassis car. Following chassis types that I know of (read in the course) -

1.) Body on frame (conventional) - example Willys Jeep MB body and chassis are separate. Body helb by rubber mounts.

2.) Semi integral frame - example Fiat 1100, only the front engine is mounted on half chassis. rear still mounted on the integral chassis at rear. Body attached to frame by direct bolting.

3.) Uni body / unichassis (integral frame) - example Maruti 800, chassis structural members are integrated in the body. Chassis is already part of body.

Monocoque construction is totally a different thing and should not be confused. McLaren F1 road car and the formula 1 cars are example of this type. There in there is no chassis structural members and all load bearing is taken care by body panels.

Citoren traction advent was the first mass produces unibody and front wheel drive car. I do not remember now but certainly there was a car even before citroen sporting front wheel drive.

Christie in the early 1900's, Alvis in the mid 20's, Cord in the late 20's had front wheel drive. There might have been others.

Not sure but did the Traction also have all independent suspension?

Kind regards

Aditya

EDIT: I think Tracta and Gregoire and Miller also made front wheel drive cars, not sure when.

BTW, what do you mean by 'GHP' ?
I stand amazed at my comment, GHP. I know not what I referred to. Alas I am wondering if they might have been the initials of some commenter in an earlier comment.

Oh, but before that they must produce an original invoice for the car when bought new to help determine the value of the tax!

Karl,

You remember this 'awful' (my opinion) yellow and maroon Citroen Traction Avant , don't you How we admired the hand painted colour applied with a brush and still wet when we saw it!

BTW, the owner of this Citroen owns the Rover Cyclops and he had the next generation 'aunty' Rover as well which was regularly hired out for film shoots. I've seen both Rover's deteriorate over the years as they are kept outside the owner's house compound and not really protected either from the elements of vandals.

The Rover's are still in pretty decent shape though, needing some urgent TLC.

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

This thread is on Vintage & Classic cars in India, I would like, just for this post, add 'undivided" India.

In Pakistan an Amilcar has been discovered. It is a 1922 Amilcar C4 Sports Roadster discovered and now owned by Shahzeb UL Haq Malik of Islamabad. The car was known years ago but they lost track of it. Shahzeb managed to trace it and aquire it over a few months of efforts after he came to know of its existence from Mohsin Ikram.
This is a great find, I have only ever heard of an Amilcar in Mumbai, near Kemps Corner, it existed in the 1960's but it was subsequently scrapped. This car is fairly complete. They are trying to get some history on the car as well.

I am attaching pics taken from his Facebook page, check out the link for comments: https://www.facebook.com/ShahzebMalik

I loved this discovery, its a great find and it should be gently restored.

Cheers harit

It was probably the same car pictured here, raced in 1927 by J Mehta.
