Looks a very neat 1955 Desoto Custom. The small tail lights confirms the year. These are basically rebadged Plymouths

Yep! Seems like the Gulf war was the culprit for the reason of this otherwise very original car being a victim of Dieselization. :(

More likely the declining spares for the original engines of these cars and restrictions on imports of the same! :(

schakravarthy, thats really a Good car and the pics taken give a very classic feel. Thanks for sharing.

Though the Dashboard has been modified, still the interiors look good. And yes the heart replaced by the Perkins 4 cylinder (Perkins and Simpsons). It was called as P4. Huge engine with lot of torque. Many American cars running in India or rather I should say Asia were fitted with the same engine in the 70's.
I loved the sound when the 4 cylinders warmed up. Being a DI engine cold starting with larger starter motor was an issue.

I remember a similar Desoto doing shuttle trip as a private taxi between Aurangabad and Nasik. I use to admire the car while going to school and college. It was fitted with a Matador engine. The exterior had original paint whereas the interior was typical 70's-80's with cream colour curtains and all sorts of modified colourful lights fitted similar to the truck cabins. But I was fortunate enough that my dad took me to the garage to show the car. Seeing my interest the owner obliged and let me into all its corners.
Later when I grew up I came to know that the car was sold to a Scrap person.

Another Car that I saw getting ripped off or die was a 56-57 Dodge kingsway Stationwagon. It was on my daily route and I observed rather admired it for around 11 years. The owner was an Army man from Jammu and had to shift from Aurangabad leaving the car behind. My dad enquired if it was for sale in 90's. The care taker quoted 65000rs. On inspection we came to know the engine Perkins 6 cyl had a major brake down due to which the car was stationary for 15 odd years. After couple of years admiring it daily, I figured out that the car was shifted to an open military land as there was a new tenant in military house/apartment. Being close to Kendriya Vidyalay school & Regiment school, children used this car as a playing toy. Everything was ripped off within a couple of months and there stood a car with only body shell. Later the military personel got rid of it to use the land for trainning purpose. It saddened me that we could not buy it considering the documentation, scarcity of engine parts and cost involved.
Anyways by that time we could buy another car which will remind Karlosedevile of his childhood.

Very nice panel truck find. This has a excellent potential to be made into a beautiful pickup.

This Chevy is just 2 numbers after our one time Studebaker Champion MYZ 451
